Under ANC-led coalition with ActionSA, Tshwane water tanker spending exploded by 455% to R777m, while water losses rose to 40%. Residents get tankers instead of taps. These are clear signs of mafia capture and self-inflicted crisis. This money could’ve easily been used to improve water infrastructure in the CoT.

Was I pushed out for taking on Tshwane’s water tanker mafia? The DA worked to give Hammanskraal real water from taps, not trucks. The ANC chose the tanker cartels instead, blowing R777 million a 455% increase on water that costs residents more and delivers less. My administration fought to end Tshwane’s reliance on water tankers and deliver clean tap water to communities. When you challenge the tanker mafia, you threaten those who profit from residents’ suffering.

Tshwane-owned water tankers are on the road providing water to residents. We recently announced that we are abandoning contracted services for water tankers. From 1 April, City staff have been working to provide water to residents in need. We visited Hammanskraal hydrant collection points this morning along with Ward Councillors and MMC for Utility Services Cllr Frans Boshielo. While work is underway to stabilise water supply through infrastructure maintenance and repairs, residents must continue to receive adequate water supply. All these efforts form part our Water Stabilisation Plan that’s backed by funding from the City’s budget. City of Tshwane

The state of water infrastructure in South Africa is poor. We have gone years without investing in maintenance or construction. What we are witnessing currently is evidence of years of neglect. In Tshwane, we have been criticised for using water tankers to ensure continued service delivery of water to residents in times of crisis. However, this positioning of blame neglects the context of what we’ve inherited and are now trying to fix -aging infrastructure.

Instead, they’re entrenching a system that profits from residents’ suffering, while the water tanker mafia grows richer and the ANC’s patronage network benefits. During my tenure, we had a clear plan to deliver water to Hammanskraal - and we were on track to make it happen. Hammanskraal deserves better. 💧

Today, we unveiled 15 new water tankers - enhancing the city’s capacity to provide much needed relief to residents in times of crisis. The plan is increase our capacity to 100 vehicles with R20 million set aside. We are also spending more on the maintenance of water infrastructure as part of our Water Stabilisation Plan. ✅R163.3 million for bulk water provision ✅R158.9 million for wastewater upgrades ✅R101 million for pipe replacement ✅ R120 million for water conservation and demand management ✅R53.9 million for reservoir upgrades City of Tshwane
