💧In the past year alone, Tshwane lost 39% of its water with almost 10,000 leaks unattended. Instead of fixing the leaks, the ANC-led coalition has increased spending on water tankers and security contracts that benefit their patronage network. The Gauteng ANC has responded to the DA's water mafia billboard, calling it "opportunistic". ANC Gauteng Chairperson Panyaza Lesufi responded after the DA accused the ANC and ActionSA of feeding a lucrative tanker industry instead of fixing Tshwane's broken water infrastructure. Tshwane-owned water tankers are on the road providing water to residents. We recently announced that we are abandoning contracted services for water tankers. From 1 April, City staff have been working to provide water to residents in need. We visited Hammanskraal hydrant collection points this morning along with Ward Councillors and MMC for Utility Services Cllr Frans Boshielo. While work is underway to stabilise water supply through infrastructure maintenance and repairs, residents must continue to receive adequate water supply. All these efforts form part our Water Stabilisation Plan that’s backed by funding from the City’s budget. City of Tshwane

Our goal is to reduce reliance on water tankers. We have purchased 15 city owned water tankers for emergency circumstances where residents may be in need . We are also determined to increase spending on infrastructure to reduce reliance on private entities to deliver water to residents in emergency situations. City of Tshwane

The state of water infrastructure in South Africa is poor. We have gone years without investing in maintenance or construction. What we are witnessing currently is evidence of years of neglect. In Tshwane, we have been criticised for using water tankers to ensure continued service delivery of water to residents in times of crisis. However, this positioning of blame neglects the context of what we’ve inherited and are now trying to fix -aging infrastructure.

Instead, they’re entrenching a system that profits from residents’ suffering, while the water tanker mafia grows richer and the ANC’s patronage network benefits. During my tenure, we had a clear plan to deliver water to Hammanskraal - and we were on track to make it happen. Hammanskraal deserves better. 💧

Today, we unveiled 15 new water tankers - enhancing the city’s capacity to provide much needed relief to residents in times of crisis. The plan is increase our capacity to 100 vehicles with R20 million set aside. We are also spending more on the maintenance of water infrastructure as part of our Water Stabilisation Plan. ✅R163.3 million for bulk water provision ✅R158.9 million for wastewater upgrades ✅R101 million for pipe replacement ✅ R120 million for water conservation and demand management ✅R53.9 million for reservoir upgrades City of Tshwane
