The US may have to face an Iranian navy equipped with 2,000 missile launchers (VLS cells, deck containers and missile tubes.) Iran has been investing heavily in recent years in a low-cost, swarm-style navy. In recent days, I have discussed Iran reportedly holding around 5,000 sea mines in stock, along with numerous coastal batteries armed with anti-ship missiles capable of ranges up to 1,700 km. Yesterday, I argued that if the American force aims to overthrow the regime, it will be a failure because it lacks the scale to do so. However, if the goal is merely to play the part and pre-arrange an attack, half that force would suffice. What does Iran have in naval terms? 1. Large Ships (Frigates, Destroyers, and Base Ships) - Units: 12 ships (Mowj, Makran, Shahid Mahdavi classes). - Launchers: Deck containers and VLS (12–24 per base ship). - Anti-ship range: 1,000–1,700 km (Abu Mahdi missiles and others ballistic missiles in containers). - Anti-air range: 150 km (Sayyad-3). 2. Attack Catamarans (Shahid Soleimani Class) - Units: 5–6 units. - Launchers: 22–28 VLS cells + 6–8 box launchers. - Anti-ship range: 1,000– 1,700 km (Ghadr-380 and Abu Mahdi). - Anti-air range: 150 km (Sayyad-3 / Navvab). 3. Submarines (Kilo, Fateh, and Ghadir Classes) Iran operates about 25–30 submarines - Kilo Class (Large): 3 units. Launch Jask-2 cruise missiles via torpedo tubes. - Fateh Class (Medium): 3–4 units. Fully integrated with cruise missiles. - Ghadir Class (Mini-subs): 20-23 units. Specialists in ambushes in the Strait of Hormuz. - Range: Jask-2 cruise missiles with 300 km range (submerged launch). - High-speed Hoot supercavitating torpedoes. 4. Submarines' Key Advantage: Although they have fewer launchers than the fast boats, their ability to fire Jask-2 missiles while submerged enables surprise attacks against carrier strike groups, complementing the aerial saturation tactics used by catamarans and fast boats. Catamarans' Key Advantage: Stealthy design, armed with air defense and long-range missiles, employing hit-and-run tactics, posing a serious threat to any navy. If Iran is truly attacked and chooses to retaliate, we can expect true chaos in the global markets, as this conflict would impact the entire region. Iran is a country of 90million people.
