I feel like the industry is making too big of a jump and trying to pretend that this is amazing, but it's not. It's slop, and I think they are not coming to terms with it. Over the weekend, I added multiplayer "paint ball" dogfight to Tiny Skies, so players can fly around pelting each other with colourful paint balls, just for fun. I tried meshy and tripo to generate some 3D models for the game and the mesh vertices count are really high and lags the game a lot (probably because my game is a globe with thousands of objects - albeit mostly instanced). To my surprise, I found Gemini 3.1 Pro to be really quite good at generating good looking 3D models that are low in poly count. It generated 3D models at a much higher quality than Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6 and GPT 5.4. You can see the upgraded biplane models and some objects in the video below. #vibejam

Meta released SAM3 a model to reconstruct objects from segmented images. I tried it and here are 4 things I found out - The generation is incredibly fast when compared with other 3D GenAI models - The models generated are not meshes but Gaussian Splatting. I was surprised that in the paper it was not mentioned anywhere - When generating multiple objects the arrangement is a bit messed up. - Unfortunately, it is impossible to download any of the .ply generated 😔 I cannot stop thinking about the implications of this in XR. Objects in the real world could be almost instantly turned into photorealistic copies and even rearranged to the user's wish.

Apple Maps 3d is insanely impressive now (see video below) Google on the other hand decided to build an insanely clunky solution to display 3d maps to avoid using mobile GPUs: A Google server streams (!) a live video of its 3d rendered map to you, the result is a disastrous: a super laggy and clunky 3d view full of video compression artefacts with a response time of 2-3 seconds for every movement And I know WHY they built that, someone felt it was not inclusive to only have 3d maps that are high performing on iOS because Apple's GPUs are insanely fast and can deal with it (as you can see below in Apple Maps) but they wanted to support inferior phones, I get it But then they also decided to worsen the experience for iOS users who could easily run 3d natively on its GPU It's just an insane product decision, there's no way to cut it: they could have super smooth 3d like Apple Maps but neutered it with a clunky live stream Even more insane because Google does have native 3d on iOS in a completely different app that nobody uses: Google Earth Is 3d important? Blackfiles videos are so good it made me realize that it doesn't make sense for me to spend a month on a 3d video anymore not because i can't or because i don't enjoy it... it's because ai does it better now i'm not bitter or resentfull about it... fuck, i still find joy in creating and i'll keep doing 3d for that feeling alone... but i can't fin a practical way in which this stuff is worth grinding months for? i'll just merge with AI, that's the way i'll find other creative things to do when i have free time, like growing a farm, or build a house for my dog or whatever... but no fucking way i am spending more than a month making a video anymore
