Unless liberty is defended with force, it will be crushed by an aggressor who is more than willing to use violence. Hong Kong became one of the freest and richest cities under the British with no natural resources, just a government that mostly stayed out of the way. And...

🇭🇰 HONG KONG JUST CONVICTED ITS LAST PRESS FREEDOM FIGHTER AND DEMOCRACY DIES A LITTLE MORE Jimmy Lai, a 78-year-old media tycoon who dared to criticize China, was found guilty today of "colluding with foreign forces" under Hong Kong's draconian national security law. Lai ran a newspaper that told inconvenient truths, and now he could die in prison. He is a self-made billionaire who fled mainland China as a child, built a clothing empire, then founded Apple Daily, Hong Kong's loudest pro-democracy newspaper. While Beijing's puppets published propaganda, Lai's paper covered corruption, supported the 2019 protests, and reminded Hong Kong what free speech looked like. That made him dangerous. His "crime" was writing articles. Meeting with U.S. officials. Advocating for Hong Kong's autonomy, a right supposedly guaranteed until 2047 under the "one country, two systems" framework China now treats like toilet paper. The verdict is a middle finger to judicial independence. 3 judges (no jury allowed in national security cases, conveniently) spent a year deciding that journalism equals sedition. Lai has already rotted in solitary confinement for 5 years. He's diabetic, has high blood pressure, and faces life imprisonment for the revolutionary act of... running a newspaper. This isn't just about one man. It's the death rattle of Hong Kong's freedoms. The city's Democratic Party disbanded Sunday. The opposition is crushed. Apple Daily was forced to close in 2021. Beijing calls Lai a "pawn of external anti-China forces." The real translation: anyone who speaks up gets destroyed. Hong Kong was supposed to be different. It was the Chinese city where you could breathe freely, protest openly, and publish without fear. Now it's just another authoritarian playground where the truth gets you locked up. Press freedom didn't die in Hong Kong today. It's been dying slowly, and Jimmy Lai's conviction is just the latest nail in the coffin. Source: Sky News, Reuters, AP News
