At least 2 groups are behind this. The Azawad Liberation Front, a coalition of Tuareg and Arab separatists formed in late 2024, has been pushing for an independent homeland in northern Mali for decades. Alongside them, JNIM, al-Qaeda's West Africa affiliate, has been waging a parallel insurgency across the Sahel. Mali's military junta has been relying on Russian Africa Corps mercenaries since cutting ties with France in 2022. But Russian forces have reportedly been withdrawing from the north, and the FLA has been filling the vacuum fast. Earlier today, they raised their flag over a military base in Kidal and reportedly downed a Malian Air Force helicopter.
