While learning Unreal Engine 5, I decided to port over most of Hyperion to it to see if I could potentially move my workflows over to UE5. Although it worked decently well, it didn't work well enough to allow me to change over entirely. Hyperion is simply too complex of an asset for real-time workflows (or at least is limited due to my knowledge of said workflows). 131 4K-8K UDIMs at over 8 channels and a solid amount of shaders with layering being the biggest bottleneck. I couldn't even match the shading setup to what I have in RenderMan, UE gave me a warning that the material was too complex. I was using the new Substrate materials, which mimic RenderMan LAMA shaders. The render below is using the pathtracer. As you can see there are some random flickering parts which I couldn't fix during my tests. This render of course doesn't have any displacement either (which Hyperion heavily relies on). I think Unreal Engine has a very bright future, but it is still limited by todays hardware technology for high end VFX work. Maybe in a few years I will give it another try when hardware improves and the engine becomes a bit more versatile in feature-set.

It tackled a ground-up rewrite of a production codebase, and actually built something that works. HOWEVER: Coding performance varied a lot at different reasoning levels. We recommend using it on xhigh for best results. - Incredibly good writer. Opus 4.8 scored a 79.6 on our writing benchmark—measuring models on real-world writing tasks we do all of the time like essay writing, promo email writing, and more. It beats GPT-5.5 by 6 points. It produces well-written prose with fewer "AI-isms". It's also very good at writing in your voice given the right context. HOWEVER: Writing performance also varied with reasoning levels. Today we discussed the threats and challenges we face right now, as we approach the fall, when Putin is preparing new attacks against Ukraine, additional mobilization in Russia, and a further expansion of the war. It's important that today we have a decision on the European Union's new sanctions package against Russia. And I'm grateful to every European leader who made this possible. This is already the 21st package, and today Micheál assured me that he will work toward the 22nd. Now, during Ireland's Presidency of the EU, there are also decisions on the clusters for Ukraine. Two clusters have already been opened, and I am grateful for the readiness to keep supporting this work. It's very important that Ireland, as the country holding the Presidency, provides leadership, and that Ukraine can count on opening the remaining clusters. My home was a magical place. Only ashes remain. The outpouring of support from community has been monumental and every message, donation, gesture has truly been food for me these last few days. We’ve got a long road ahead of us. We evacuated with only the clothes on our backs so we truly have nothing left. My art, my jewelry, my clothing, my books, my photos - everything curated and collected in my material in my life is now gone, including the home we had poured everything into to buy in the first place. We are underinsured, it will be a battle. Sobering. Hard. Life-Changing. But… I want everyone to remember its beauty and optimism, the joy the disco cabin brought me and so many others who gathered here. At this exact time last year - Punks came together at my home as the sunset kissed the ocean in a sky of pink, sweet tunes drifting over us with tacos in hand. And perhaps there is also something poetic in this total loss, a silver lining I will find one day? This moment was framed to me as the beginning of a new “hero’s journey” and being a lover of Joseph Campbell - and that concept feels true. 🐦‍🔥 “We're in a freefall into future. We don't know where we're going. Things are changing so fast, and always when you're going through a long tunnel, anxiety comes along. And all you have to do to transform your hell into a paradise is to turn your fall into a voluntary act. It's a very interesting shift of perspective and that's all it is... joyful participation in the sorrows and everything changes.”

So, by now I'm sure you saw the AI fanart recreation of the Princess Mononoke trailer. It got a LOT of feedback, mostly from people telling the creator what a terrible thing he did and how AI assisted workflows can never be used for anything good or meaningful and most of all that it can never be used for art. That's such nonsense. Of course it can. If it's wielded by artists and great storytellers, great things will come of it. If you hand a violin to someone on the street they'll be able to make it make sounds.. if you hand it to a talented musician it becomes a conveyer of thoughts, emotion and art. Here's a small scene from Mononoke that I did an AI take on.. it's far from perfect and to animate this properly would require much more work. The AI workflows we have today are lacking so many control elements. But to think those things won't come.. come on. Of course they will. But most importantly, in a way where they don't overtake the art completely, but instead acts like an "amplifier" of the artists using the tools. This technology will be in most of our creative tools in the very near future with full controllability. Oh and I never liked the idea of turning old disney classics into live-action films, or doing the same with the beautiful work of Studio Ghibli. But for the purpose of this post I hope you'll forgive me ;-) #art #animation

Act MP Mark Cameron has this morning announced he’s leaving parliament, sadly as he is too ill to continue. Act have however announced new candidates - Manu Singh for Manurewa who is a real estate agent who’s branch only has Indian sales reps. Also they are running Malkiat Singh for Papakura (who campaigns in a pink turban) a licensed immigration agent who only last year lobbied Erica Stanford to “Remove all caps for parent resident visa’s” arguing that limiting immigrants (usually elderly) parents is ‘ridiculous’ and holding back ‘progress’ An MBIE paper acknowledging Singh’s petition says : [The petitioner’s reason is stated as]: “I believe the Parent Resident visa category is cruel and makes people rely on luck instead of motivating them to focus on eligibility, hard-work, and entrepreneurship, which would ultimately lead to progress for all New Zealanders. In May 2024, the Immigration New Zealand website shows a total of 9,616 EOIs. With the current limit of 500 per year for these EOIs, it could take years to be selected. I believe this is ridiculous.” MBIE noted -“The petitioner is a licensed immigration adviser.” One of Nationals Indian candidates (Ghouse Maneed) also lobbied the govt to allow in all Indians back into NZ who have an expired work or student visa.
