This is NOT untouchability at all! The priest would have done exactly the same even if the people handing over the books were from any upper caste. In traditional temples, purohits are required to strictly distance themselves to protect their aura while they are actively offering prayers to the sacred idols. This practice is called Vaideekam in Sanskrit. There is also scientific relevance, the aura of the purohit gets maligned when they touch members of the general public, and they lose their sanctity / spiritual state needed for the rituals. It’s purely about preserving the priest’s ritual purity and the sanctity of the deity , not caste discrimination. Let’s stop mislabeling ancient traditions as untouchability. 🙏

Equality in Buddhism

GP Doctor can touch patient in normal setting like Guru can touch Sisya. However, Doctor going inside operation theater cannot touched or touch anyone. If touched they must redo whole cleanup again for proper "Shuddi". Same way Priest performing pooja cannot touch anyone.
