🚨 Level Up in Havana: Armed Queers SLC Founder Explains Why Cuba Is a Finishing School for U.S. Activists Here is Ermiya Fanaeian of Armed Queers SLC explaining why becoming a “brigadista” is treated as a rite of passage for political organizers. Her pitch is simple. If you want to “level up” as an organizer in the United States, you have to go to Cuba. She says you come back “stronger, more disciplined, and more committed” to revolutionary organizing. Fanaeian argues that trips run through the National Network on Cuba and ICAP are designed to debunk American propaganda—by showcasing what U.S. narratives supposedly claim is "impossible." She claims the political education there is deeper than anything you can get through “any forum, literature, or demonstration” in the United States. She adds that even after ten years of organizing, including Cuba solidarity work, she and her comrades “didn’t truly know what it meant to be a part of an international movement” until they visited Cuba for the first time. She stresses that going to Cuba as a brigadista is “not tourism.” It is “political education.” It is “internationalism in practice,” framed as preparation for struggle back home. You should see this as explicit cadre formation, with Cuba marketed as a revolutionary finishing school for U.S. activists. That context matters given that Armed Queers SLC is currently under FBI investigation for connections to Tyler Robinson, the alleged killer of Charlie Kirk.
