UPDATE: The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate's Court has convicted eight environmental activists on charges of public nuisance linked to a protest against the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). The group has been on remand since August 1, 2025. Magistrate Sylvia Muwonge has sent them back to Luzira Prison, with sentencing set for April 17. However, their lawyer Samuel Wandera criticises the delay in sentencing, noting that some of the accused are students who have missed their studies at various universities. Chadema Chairman, Tundu Lissu, was escorted out of the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam today, August 18, 2025 after the reading of witness statements and exhibits (committal proceedings) in the treason case against him. The case, which was heard before Principal Resident Magistrate Franco Kiswaga, has now been referred to the High Court. Lissu is facing a single charge of treason under section 39(2)(d) of the Penal Code, alleged to have been committed on April 3, 2025 in Dar es Salaam.

UPDATE: Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi has declined to release an Ethiopian national accused in a Shs917 million land fraud case, citing lack of substantial sureties. In his ruling, Magistrate Kayizzi noted that while the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty, her non-Ugandan status raises concerns of being a potential flight risk as stated by the Assistant DPP Joan Keko. The chief magistrate, Mr Andrew Kabombo, who was scheduled to hear their application today, reportedly travelled to Kampala for “official duties”. The court’s grade one magistrate, Alex Baguma, who presided over today’s court proceedings, told the suspects who have been on remand for a month that he could not hear their application because the case was allocated to Mr Kabombo and not him. UPDATE: State Prosecutor Brian Kalinaki has asked Masaka High Court to return Fr Deusdedit Ssekabira’s case to the Chief Magistrate’s Court for plea in a Shs500 million money laundering case. Fr Ssekabira appeared before High Court judge Justice Victoria Nakintu Katamba, with the prosecution arguing that the procedure used to bring him before the High Court was improper since he was not committed by the lower court. The prosecution, which earlier said it was ready to proceed, told court on Tuesday that the High Court lacks jurisdiction.
