UPDATE: Tempers flared this evening at Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court during exchanges between the magistrate and environmental activists. The magistrate declined to issue a judgment in the case against 11 anti-EACOP activists, mostly students from Students Against EACOP Uganda, who have spent 196 days on remand since their arrest on August 1 last year. The ruling gives the State time to verify the proposed sureties. Magistrate Ritah Neube Kidasa said it would be “illogical” to release an accused before assessing the suitability of the sureties, emphasising that while an accused has a constitutional right to apply for bail, the prosecution’s response must also be considered. The chief magistrate, Mr Andrew Kabombo, who was scheduled to hear their application today, reportedly travelled to Kampala for “official duties”. The court’s grade one magistrate, Alex Baguma, who presided over today’s court proceedings, told the suspects who have been on remand for a month that he could not hear their application because the case was allocated to Mr Kabombo and not him.
