Rutte called Putin the governor of Texas and stated that he does not care about Russia's opinion on NATO troops in Ukraine. "Why should we care what Russia thinks about troops in Ukraine? That is not for Russia to decide. Honestly, I am amazed. I'm not criticizing you, but I often hear this question. Thank you for asking it, but I am really surprised. This is just not gonna happen. The best that the Ukrainians can hope for at this point in time is freezing the status quo. He wanted to prevent the enlargement of NATO. He got Finland and Sweden. He wanted to keep our defense expenditure down, and it's now going up to 5%. Secondly, he's losing on the military front. When the war began, Russia acquired 12% of Ukrainian territory. That's 12 years ago. Since then, 8%. In the past two years, 1%. In December, Ukraine was able to kill 34,000 Russian soldiers. Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights defender Oleksandra Matviichuk Oleksandra Matviichuk: Ukraine has found itself at the epicenter of events that will shape the future of the world. Because this is not just a war between two states, Russia and Ukraine, it is a war between two systems: authoritarianism and democracy. Peace is not made only on paper. Peace has to be made on the ground. And peace is not Russian occupation. Very often, I find myself in a weird situation where I have to convince someone that people in Ukraine want peace... Are you serious? People in Ukraine dream of peace. We simply do not want to be occupied by Russia. Because peace does not mean occupation. Occupation means disappearance, torture, rape, the denial of identity, the forcible adoption of children, filtration camps, and mass graves. So when we use the word "peace," we have to speak about freedom - the freedom to live without fear of violence and to have a long-term perspective for the future. This is peace.

Asked if Putin can be trusted in the negotiations over the Ukraine war, Senate Armed Services Chairman Roger Wicker said: "No. Putin is a war criminal who should be in jail for the rest of his life, if not executed." He also said that the Russians will try to do 'anything to their advantage." On if he's concerned that Ukraine and Europe not at table yet in Russia-U.S. talks, Wicker said: "I don't know what the scheme is. There may very well be a method to all of this," but said that ultimately Ukraine needs to be at table to get a "fair result."

US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker (my two cents) below): I think the Russian threat sometimes is a little overstated. They have not had a lot of success. And to your point, Ukraine has actually taken back territory. To me, that points to a weakness in Russia, and as their economy continues to falter, I think their continuation of this war is going to be difficult. My input: Russia has not had a lot of success in Ukraine because Ukrainian Defenders make a tremendous effort, and the West supplies Ukraine with weapons. Yes, Ukraine has retaken our territories, but this is first and foremost a compliment to Ukrainian skill. Russia does not play by the rules, Putin knows that his power relies on Russia waging a war, and Russia does not care about its people. NATO has named Russia as its most significant threat, and Russia remains one.
