I'm Canadian, and the math I was taught, is the same way as the Japan method shown. I don't know what that USA method is, but that is some kind of fucked up way to do it.

I don't know anyone who would use the FOIL method with nothing but CONSTANTS.

This is incorrect. Order of operations is the one thing in mathematics that teachers genuinely force down our throats. The left is not taught anywhere as the proper way of solving the equation. It may be useful long form to see how the concepts interwork, but that's iffy.

Absolutely not true. Simple PEMDAS in the US as well. The method you showed is only for unlike quantities and there are no variables involved, and the Japanese would treat them the same
