Nobody was taught the first way, that’s only useful in algebra when you don’t have the values

I'm Canadian, and the math I was taught, is the same way as the Japan method shown. I don't know what that USA method is, but that is some kind of fucked up way to do it.

I don't know anyone who would use the FOIL method with nothing but CONSTANTS.

That's not how Americans are taught. Work in parenthesis first unless you have a direct multiplier outside the parenthesis.

wtf you talking about. everyone would do 5+3=8 and that squared is 64.

This is incorrect. Order of operations is the one thing in mathematics that teachers genuinely force down our throats. The left is not taught anywhere as the proper way of solving the equation. It may be useful long form to see how the concepts interwork, but that's iffy.

Has to be ragebait. We don't foil if both terms are integers.

Is this how USA does it now???? PEMDAS is 5+3 is 8 then you square it so it’s 64. What’s all this other nonsense

1 step = 64. Used to piss off my teachers, then I would lose marks for not showing my work even when they didn't specify I had too.

The one on the left is only done when you have variables Like if it were (x + y)^2

I'm Gen X American and I was taught to always do the work inside the parentheses first, for the precise reason shown. Videos like this are stupid bait. Alas, it works. Almost entirely on an American audience.

I answered that in my head in about 2 secs or less. I have never seen the method on the left in my life but I'm sure someone thinks that it is neat. Totally unnecessary but very thoughtful. By the way I'm from the US

As someone who learned math in the US, this is not how I would do it. Unless there was a variable

Ameriboo 🇺🇸 profil fotoğrafı

I have a better way to make it complicated (a+b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2 (5 + 3)^2 5^2 + 2x5x3 + 3^2 25 + 30 + 9 64

I'm so fucking sick of shit colored hands who genuinely think people do the shit on the left because they couldn't comprehend the Pythagorean theory all the way through even college

Wow; today I 'leared' that 1956 California elementary-school taught "Japanese" multiplication methods! Please tell me the "USA" method shown isn't nationwide...

Basic mathematical functions are taught in USA. The only time this is expected if this procedure is done to learn algebra variables

I am USA raised and the way listed for Japan is how we learned to do it in school, how we teach it, and so this is kinda dumb. Hey kids PEDMAS

Sean MacTira profil fotoğrafı

Absolutely not true. Simple PEMDAS in the US as well. The method you showed is only for unlike quantities and there are no variables involved, and the Japanese would treat them the same

The “Japanese” version is the version that older Americans learned how to use! This new shit is stupid and harmful when taken a timed test! In fact we learned how to do simple math in our heads!
