to avoid all that trouble...buy a new one

I make a full metal sleeve w/biting 30% depth multipronge claws. That barley fits into the "tool" then a full angled weld. Not going to skip or slip. I've made hundreds for locals. Axes, picks, sledge whatever. Serious use on the job tools, a few for volunteer fire departments.

I just soak my mallets, and brick hammers in a pail of water.
