A tourist bus plunged through the ice on Lake Baikal, Russia, killing eight people on Friday. The vehicle, carrying Chinese tourists, was reportedly travelling across the frozen surface outside an official ice road when the ice cracked and it sank. Seven passengers and the driver died. One tourist survived after managing to escape from the submerged bus. Authorities have launched a criminal investigation. Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest freshwater lake in Siberia, is a popular tourist attraction, especially in winter when the surface freezes. However, ice conditions can be unpredictable, and authorities prohibit crossing outside official ice roads maintained for safety.
