What we’re seeing right now could be historic. If Hurricane Humberto is upgraded to a CATEGORY 5, it would mark two consecutive years with multiple Cat 5s in the Atlantic. Shortly after 5 pm yesterday, Deputies responded to a call for a dog in distress in the area of 228th and Harney Street, just south of Waterloo. When they arrived they were informed by homeowners that a dog had fallen through the ice on the lake and was treading water. Deputy Kubik, a DCSO K9 handler, made use of a kayak that was on one of the homeowner's docks and quickly made his way across the ice, using his oar to break the ice as he paddled to the dog. About the time he reached the dog, Waterloo Fire & Rescue also arrived and assisted in pulling Deputy Kubik and Boomer the dog back to shore. Once on shore, Deputy Clark took the 'chilly dog' inside to warm him up with a hair dryer. We are happy to report that after a brief vet visit yesterday, Boomer is doing great. Thank you to our courageous Deputies and our partners at Waterloo Fire and Rescue for their assistance.

What can four decades of land cover data reveal? A changing landscape. The latest release of the Annual National Land Cover Database (NLCD) extends annual mapping through 2025, providing a longer view of how landscapes across the United States have changed over time. One example is the Great Salt Lake in Utah. In the mid-1980s, the lake’s water levels reached historic highs. Since then, water levels have fluctuated over the years but have declined overall. The New Orleans New Orleans JazzFest is the Best. I love festivals and love this one the most, so I highly recommend it. I started coming 31 years ago and have only missed two because I love it so much. I come with a bunch of friends, our adult kids, and in some cases our and our friends' grandkids - so we've evolved three generations around the festival over three decades and they all love it because it's so great. It's great because it has the best music - all imaginable types from all over the world, including the biggest names (I saw the The Rolling Stones three days ago) and the most talented lesser-known great musicians (like the Meters, the Nevilles, Trombone Shorty playing simultaneously on 9 stages. It's an orgy of great music. And it has the best food -- not just for a festival but for food experiences anywhere. If I had to pick the top place to go for great eating, New Orleans would vie for my top pick. That's because it has the best indigenous food in the US, and the local restaurants have food kiosks at the Fest serving unique delectables like crawfish strudel, soft shell crab po-boys, seafood gumbo, etc. I recommend what I just told you plus a boiled crawfish sack and crawfish monica. And the people's vibe is cool too because the people couldn't be more diverse in ethnic and economic backgrounds while they share the same love of the great fundamentals of music, food, and camaraderie. It is funky - too funky/grungy for some until they settle into all the good stuff. And that's just the Fest. New Orleans has lots of great music clubs and restaurants that we wallow in after the Fest, typically til 2 or 3am. I suffer from FOMO, so I'm challenged here. My favorite music club, my favorite band, and my favorite people are the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The music is great because the Preservation Hall (which is a tiny converted, old-world residence that holds about 40 people) attracts the best musicians in the world. There's an abundance of exciting flavors here to stimulate all your senses and it's a great place to go with friends. So I suggest you check it out next year. #JazzFest

First, the NYPD was not shutting down a harmless snow day snowball fight. Officers responded after receiving calls about disorderly conduct around the park. Over the loudspeaker, they told people to enjoy themselves and remain inside the park. One officer can clearly be heard encouraging the kids to have fun. They stood back and monitored the situation. Then the snowballs started flying. Not just light powder tossed between friends, but hardened snow and chunks of ice aimed directly at officers. Second, yes, there were kids involved. There were also grown adults in the crowd. Some of them were not calming things down. They were egging it on, urging people to throw ice at uniformed officers. Third, these were not soft, playful snowballs. Many were large, compacted chunks of ice, some the size of a football. Ice like that can break bones and split skin. It did. Officers were hospitalized with facial lacerations. The footage is available for anyone who wants to watch it. When members of the press decline to describe what is plainly visible because it may hurt Mamdani politically, that stops being journalism. It becomes advocacy.

Then you handed the body a long weekend to switch over to a fat-burning system it has barely touched since you were weaned. Naturally the first week feels flat. You asked a rusty engine to turn over and panicked when it coughed. That is the adaptation, not the verdict. The body has to dust off enzymes and pathways it left dormant for years, relearning how to run on fat the way it ran for most of human history. That takes weeks, not an afternoon. But no. Day five, the weights feel heavy, and out you charge to inform the internet that humans simply cannot function without bread. A species that crossed ice ages on meat and fat, apparently felled by one underwhelming session. Give it three or four weeks before writing the eulogy. Eat enough fat to actually fuel the transition, ride out the flat patch, and let the engine you forgot you owned warm up properly. The strength comes back once you adapt. New year. First flight of 2026. Westbound again. Today’s flight arcs away from London and bends north, following the geometry of the planet rather than the flatness of a map. The great-circle route pulls us toward Greenland’s 🇬🇱 ice and the far northern reaches of Canada 🇨🇦, places so vast and sparsely inhabited that distance still feels absolute. Town names like Iqualuit, Yellow Knife, and Crazy Woman, all part of this northern adventure. From altitude, the scale is humbling: ice, rock, forest, and very little else. There’s method behind today’s routing though. Over the North Atlantic, aircraft don’t simply choose a line and go. We fly along daily-published “roads in the sky”, tracks that are repositioned every 24 hours to account for the atmosphere’s moving parts. Eastbound traffic rides the jet stream’s tailwinds for speed and efficiency; westbound flights step away from that river of air, trading distance for fewer headwinds and a smoother, more economical crossing. The sky itself is the variable, and the routes adapt to it. It’s a reminder that aviation is less about conquering nature and more about cooperating with it, listening to the winds, respecting geography, and letting physics do its quiet work. Today was milestone for me that was a long time coming as I finally was able to tour Giga Berlin along with three of the original drone pilots that showed the world the factory as it began it’s construction back in early 2020 all the way to present day as a world-class & mature factory. Tobias Lindh has been providing ground & drone views for over 6 1/2 years, from the very beginning, with the first tree removal necessary for the earthwork for the foundation to get underway & then construction of the factory proper. He continues to provide us coverage of the factory & inspired me to try to cover Giga Texas way back in 2020. The Wolfpack Berlin - Robert & Andreas brothers Andreas & Robert also began covering Giga Berlin from the very beginning & featured well edited and beautiful cinematic drone flights over the factory for the first several years. They also inspired me to improve how I flew my drone and edited my videos. Together, Tobias, Andreas & Robert played an important role informing a world-wide audience of the progress of the factory. We had a great tour of the factory, along with Tesla Welt - german Podcast about Tesla, werk.lab & PIT HOSTΞTTLΞR 🇨🇭 , seeing much of the operation of Giga Berlin & I benefitted by getting insights & observations from the three drone operators that literally have watch everything arrive, be installed and put into operation over the past 6+ years. I did individual interviews with each of them and those will be coming out soon! For now, here are a few teasers & photos of us in the factory. Thanks to Tesla & lifeatgigaberlin for meeting with us and giving us a great tour!

Watch the difference in the practice swings and the shot. See the head dip & knee buckle? Have seen this from Lexi before. Can’t remember which major it was, but it was last season in the closing stages of the final round and tight lies. It’s a classic move from those who have anxiety with their pitching and are trying to help the ball in the air. I know it well. I had the chipping / pitching yips for a few years and was a complete mess. Head moving down & leaning back to the right shifts the low point of the club to an earlier spot. Club hits the ground too early. When you look at great pitchers they are usually shifting a little left, and slightly extending up after impact. Not dipping down and back. Imagine standing side on to the target and tossing to the landing spot with your trail arm. The dip down and knee buckle is completely at odds with how you would move. I am confident an expert short game coach could really help her with this. I reckon she is in the horrors mentally standing over these shots. No disrespect to Lexi, she’s obviously a great player. Yes, I’m just an armchair fan sitting on my couch 😎.
