Watch Spot crouch, jump, climb boxes and leap across gaps, controlled by a neural network trained with reinforcement learning (RL) and multi-expert distillation. Multiple expert policies were trained and distilled together into a single policy that was fine tuned to improve performance over diverse terrains. This work was inspired by ANYmal’s parkour capabilities. The neural network processes depth data from Spot's sensors to construct an understanding of the environment.

Caltech researchers taught a Unitree G1 humanoid robot to run using a single human motion demonstration. They used mathematical optimization to turn that one demonstration into a library of different running movements for the robot to learn from. After training, the G1 reached speeds of up to 3.3 m/s and could run outdoors while avoiding obstacles.

These guys trained a robot with water bottles, and the robot learned to pick up other objects it had never practiced on. They did this using reinforcement learning: 1. The robot had to pick a bottle out of a messy tote 2. Then it had to hand the bottle to a person 3. Only water bottles. Nothing else. After they finished training, they tested the robot on different objects: • On bottles, the success went from 80% to 98% • On snack cans, the robot's throughput rose 40% • On soft bags, the robot's performance improved by 13% even though they're deformable and much harder to handle than rigid objects. Snack cans and soft bags have different shapes and weights, and the robot was never trained on them. This was just one of three use cases they tested. Every hour we spend teaching a robot costs a ton of money. If they only get better at handling the one object they practice on, reinforcement learning will never be worth doing. But if the gains carry over, we could focus on teaching the hardest possible tasks and let the robot apply that knowledge elsewhere. Over the last few months, we’ve been thinking about how to learn from “off-domain” data - data from non-robot sources like video or simulation. These data sources are not quite good enough to learn policies (even monolithic VLA models) directly, but they still contain lots of information that can be useful for generalizable robot control. How can we develop robot learning models that are able to make use of this type of data for generalizable control? In new work, that we call HAMSTER, we show that VLMs can be useful for enabling robotic learning from off-domain data, but specifically when used through hierarchical VLA architectures. The coolest part of Microduck might not be the robot. It's how it learns to move. This repo shows the full reinforcement learning pipeline behind Microduck. The robot learns in simulation using MuJoCo, PPO and GPU-based training, then the trained policy is exported to ONNX and deployed on the real robot. But the real challenge is sim-to-real. The simulation models things like actuator behavior, battery voltage, command delays, friction and even gear backlash. That helps make the learned policy work when it moves from simulation to the physical robot. The repo includes policies for walking, fall recovery, sitting, standing, kicking, ground picking and even roller skating. Train in simulation. Test the behavior. Export the policy. Run it on a real robot.

Policies trained on real robot data via imitation can be surprisingly capable. But for domains like dexterous manipulation, they are often not quite good enough: they move slowly, miss grasps, make unreliable contact, and fail under small perturbations. Can we improve them without any additional data collection on the real robot? In SCORE, we show that we can improve real-world diffusion/flow policies cheaply by using simulation to simply learn how to steer them on deployment. This means that when performing a robot task via teleoperation — say, to collect examples for training a robot policy — it’s almost unavoidably slower than you would like, below either the capabilities of the human expert on their own or the robot performing the task. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to fix this? Unfortunately, it’s harder than it looks. You can’t just execute faster, as this alters the distribution of environment states the policy will encounter. Nadun Ranawaka Arachchige and Zhenyang Chen propose Speed-Adaptive Imitation Learning (SAIL), which adds error-adaptive guidance, adapts execution speed according to task structure, predicts controller-invariant action targets to ensure robustness across execution speeds, and explicitly models delays from, for example, sensor latency.
