Exercise Joint Sea 2026 conducted by the Chinese and Russian navies has concluded successfully. The engagement further deepened the two militaries' strategic mutual trust, consolidated their long-standing friendship and enhanced their capacity to jointly handle maritime crises.

CENTCOM Partners with Over 30 Nations, International Organizations for International Maritime Exercise (IMX) 2025 U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) hosted the International Maritime Exercise (IMX) 2025, the Middle East region’s largest multinational maritime exercise, February 9-20. IMX 25 involved 5,000 personnel from more than 30 nations and international organizations committed to preserving the rules-based international order and strengthening regional maritime security cooperation. Hosted by U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT), the 12-day exercise offered a unique opportunity for participants to collaborate and illustrate the importance of regional maritime security cooperation. This year’s iterations of IMX is linked with exercise Cutlass Express, a U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa led annual exercise designed to enhance regional maritime awareness and the combined capabilities of partner nations to respond to maritime threats. The operational phase of IMX included partner exchanges on mine countermeasures, unmanned systems and artificial intelligence integration, vessel defense, search and rescue, and mass casualty response. Allies and partners at IMX 25 also had an opportunity to train with Combined Task Force West (CTF-W) Headquarters where partner forces performed Explosive Ordnance Disposal and dive operations, Close Quarters Combat drills, and Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) container climbs. Additionally, CTF-W hosted eight partner nations, including six members from the Republic of Yemen Government (ROYG) Coast Guard in Aqaba, the Northern Red Sea, and Eilat. “IMX 25 demonstrates the collective commitment of our respective allies and partners to support regional maritime security cooperation, increase interoperability, and strengthen security and stability in the region,” said Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM commander. This is the ninth iteration of IMX since its establishment in 2012.

PH, Japan Showcase Unified Naval Might in Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) launched a new phase of defense cooperation with the successful conduct of the 2nd Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) on June 14, 2025, marking one of the first major joint activities following the recently ratified Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) between the Philippines and Japan. More than a maritime drill, the MCA underscored the operationalization of the RAA—an accord that lays the groundwork for increased joint training, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response (HADR) initiatives between the AFP and JSDF. This activity highlights the deepening trust and coordination between the two allies as they respond to traditional and emerging security challenges in the region. Participating Philippine assets included the BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG06), AW159 anti-submarine helicopter, PAF C-208 ISR aircraft, and Search and Rescue units. In fact, the US Secretary of State was in Delhi, and one of the major reasons for his being in Delhi is to participate in the Quad Foreign Minister meeting…we need to pay more attention to the foreign ministers meeting, to the working groups…the reality is much more nuanced than the simplistic understanding of Trump going to China and meeting Xi. We have to understand that the Indo-Pacific is very much there, and the four countries have real concerns, and there is a common thread, and that is the China threat…the main point of discussion is China…there are several strategic factors that are driving the Quad, and that is driving the interest and willingness of the four countries to cooperate. Focusing on the maritime dimension is so very important, specifically when countries such as China are looking at developing blue water capabilities and the PLA becoming a blue water navy. We need to really focus on the maritime capabilities of the four countries and come together forming a coalition, cooperative arrangement where the four countries could actually secure the waters…India is the only country that is injecting the maritime component within the quadrilateral dialogue. India hosts the Malabar exercise, which is more or less now a de facto quad maritime exercise…we have seen during Covid how the four countries came together and became an important stakeholder in the health security as well…but it goes beyond the traditional security issues…we have to look at the timing (of the New Delhi Quad meeting). We also have to look at the location. It is just happening after the visit of the US President to China. This is also an indication from the US that it is willing to repair ties with India, and Indo-Pacific remains an important area for them…this is one of the reasons why tomorrow's meeting is crucial. It's not a new development that India is seen as a formidable power in the Indo-Pacific…when Trump came to power again, there were some hiccups in India-US relationships, but from Australia’s and Japan's perspective, India has been very important. And with that, Quad is also very important…Quad and Indo-Pacific cannot exist without India…from Taiwan's perspective, Quad is the only arrangement within the Indo-Pacific region that is indirectly dealing with the China threat…for Taiwan, China is an existential threat. There is an alignment of interest between Quad and Taiwan…”
