⚓️📰 #USNAVY UPDATE: George Washington Celebrates 200,000th Recovery INDIAN OCEAN – After 34 years of continuous service projecting American sea power, Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) has achieved a major aviation milestone: the 200,000th fixed-wing aircraft recovery while underway in the Indian Ocean, Aug. 18, 2026. Lt. Steven Frazier, assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 147, received the honor of this historic feat by landing in an F-35C Lighting II after flying routine operations in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operation. He emphasized that it was a “team effort” from every airwing division leading up to each successful aircraft recovery. “For the George Washington, more than anything, it shows consistency over the last 34 years to be able to complete whatever mission the country calls upon it to do,” Frazier said. “For me personally, it shows that if this aircraft carrier launches me off of the ship, I’ll be able to come back and land on it.”

RIMPAC 2026, the 30th iteration of the exercise, began June 24 and brought together 30 nations, more than 30,000 personnel, 30 surface ships, five submarines, and more than 197 aircraft under the theme, Partners: Integrated and Prepared. Throughout five weeks of realistic training, participating forces enhanced combined and joint interoperability, strengthened readiness, and reinforced the partnerships that support maritime security across the Indo-Pacific “No single nation can ensure security in the Pacific alone,” said U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Jeff Jablon, Commander, RIMPAC 2026 Combined Task Force. “The global maritime environment is too large and too complex for any one country to safeguard by itself. 68 years ago this August, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus (SSN 571), made history. During the highly secret “Operation Sunshine,” Nautilus successfully conducted the first submerged transit under the North Pole. Nautilus submerged in the Barrow Strait on August 1st and traveled under the polar ice cap for 96 hours, covering 1,590 nautical miles before surfacing near Greenland. For this unprecedented feat, commanding officer Commander William R. Anderson and his crew were personally congratulated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower and awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. This historic voyage was made possible by the development of a nuclear propulsion plant under the leadership of Captain Hyman G. Rickover at the Naval Reactors Branch of the Atomic Energy Commission.
