🇺🇸 Here is a brief walk around the sacred grounds of Pearl Harbor… The USS Arizona Memorial sign. Old Glory waving strong. The silent submarine from WWII. A Navy plane standing guard. But beneath the water lies the final resting place of American heroes — over 900 of whom are entombed in the USS Arizona. Few people are aware that the bodies of 85 sailors from the USS Arizona were recovered… only to be buried as Unknowns just 10 miles away at Punchbowl Cemetery. This is why Operation 85 (🇺🇸⚓️U.S.S. Arizona “Operation 85”⚓️🇺🇸) exists. This great organization is a family-led mission (zero taxpayer money) to gather DNA from descendants of those lost and finally give these heroes their names back. If you’re related to ANYONE who served on the USS Arizona on Dec 7, 1941 — your DNA could identify one of these fallen brothers. My own great uncle was lost on the USS Arizona. I’ve personally donated and raised funds to support this great organization. Tag family. Share this. Let’s get it done.

After nearly 85 years, 17-year-old Fireman 3rd Class Royle Bradford Luker is finally home. 🇺🇸 This young Arkansas sailor was killed aboard the USS West Virginia during the Pearl Harbor attack. His remains — long buried as “unknown” at the Punchbowl in Hawaii — have now been identified through DNA and DPAA’s dedicated work. Today, his flag-draped casket arrived in Little Rock with full military honors. This is what bringing our heroes home looks like. This powerful homecoming is exactly why I strongly support Operation 85 (🇺🇸⚓️U.S.S. Arizona “Operation 85”⚓️🇺🇸)— the vital grassroots mission to identify the 85+ USS Arizona unknowns still commingled and buried as “unknowns” at the same Punchbowl cemetery. Perhaps my own great uncle, who was aboard the USS Arizona, is there. These men’s remains are mixed together from the worst day in U.S. naval history. Operation 85 is collecting DNA from family members to give them the same chance at coming home with their names restored. They’ve already hit the critical 60%+ threshold needed to move forward with disinterments and identifications. Every success like Royle Luker’s proves it can be done. No hero should remain unknown when science and family commitment can bring them home.

I was able to watch the cast and crew film the opening scene in a field on Kauai, Hawaii when I was nine years old. On that same trip, I first visited the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and the Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. I encourage every American to visit those hallowed grounds. On one level, UNCOMMON VALOR was about never leaving a man behind. On another, it was about healing, or at least acknowledging, the wounds and lessons of Vietnam. This was one of the first movies to feature a return to Vietnam to rescue MIA/POWs storyline. It would be followed by MISSING IN ACTION starring Chuck Norris, and RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II starring Sylvester Stallone. Through the medium of movies, television, and commercial fiction, America could re-fight the war, this time with a different outcome. One of the most impactful novels I read during that period of my life was MISSION MIA by J.C. Pollock. It was one of the many books that cemented my resolve to serve in Special Operations and then write thrillers. The score for the opening scene for UNCOMMON VALOR remains hauntingly vivid in my memory. The title of the film comes from the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington Ridge Park near Arlington National Cemetery. Its inscription reads: "Uncommon Valor Was A Common Virtue – Semper Fidelis”

Gen. Michael Flynn graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1981, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in Military Intelligence. His first assignment was as a paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Since then, he has served in a variety of command and staff positions to include, Commander, 313th Military Intelligence Battalion and G2, 82nd Airborne Division; G2, 18th Airborne Corps, CJ2, CJTF-180 Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan; Commander, 111th Military Intelligence Brigade at the Army’s Intelligence Center at Fort Huachuca, Arizona; Director of Intelligence, Joint Special Operations Command with duty in OEF and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF); Director of Intelligence, United States Central Command with duty in OEF and OIF; Director of Intelligence, the Joint Staff; Director of Intelligence, International Security Assistance Force-Afghanistan and US Forces-Afghanistan and Special Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Staff, G2. He most recently served as the Assistant Director of National Intelligence for Partner Engagement before becoming the DIA director on July 24, 2012. Michael T.
