Vance on Canada tariffs Asked how the White House will ease the pain if the Canada fight drags on, Vance skipped mitigation. Goal is “fairness.” His claim: Canada long slapped extraordinary restrictions on US workers. Canadian butter entered the US with little/no tariff; US farm goods into Canada can... show more

Over quota? No, American producers were not to able to sell to consumers, only to big companies like Soputo who refused to buy. The quota was a joke. Those quotas were never met. Trade never took place

Much misinformation there. US suppliers are not allowed to sell into the Canadian retail market, they can only sell to wholesalers who must import the product. If Agropur, Saputo et al don’t buy, US producers can’t go around them.

And that is why the us doesn't approach it's limits on dairy. It starts to become too egregious to even bother shipping dairy past the point of being tarriffed.

Of course they dont fill quotas. Any efforts developing the Canadian market is a waste. Once they hit the quota, they become massively uncompetitive, therefore, it’s essentially a closed market. If “they never meet their quota”, then drop it tomorrow.

US companies never exceed the quotas because they do not want to be tariffed.

AND - the USA does the same thing for - 1.Sugar (raw & refined, plus sugar‑containing products) 2.Dairy products (cheese, butter, milk powders, etc.) 3.Beef (fresh/frozen) 4.Cotton 5.Tobacco (for cigarettes) Now - please stop the lies…

The dairy farmers in Wisconsin are not very happy with Trump/Vance.

I remember Chrystia Freeland negotiating Europe/ Canada Trade Deal 2017 and then Canada’s DAIRY industry DID everything to make this deal never fully flourished Yet, the same people in power are still complaining about Trump and against Trump

It never fails to amaze me how the USA are baffled that Canada just wouldn’t roll over and in fact had the nerve to retaliate

Edited for brevity: “TRQs work to exclude American dairy”. And Canada STILL cheated to get even further UNDER quota. The CDN government violates the USMCA to actively stops the US from meeting quota

He never mentions the US pretty much does the same with their sugar and corn industry. Propaganda is yu repeat something over and over again ppl will eventually believe it

This is the core dairy problem: On the U.S. side, Canadian dairy that comes in under quota can be sold through normal commercial channels, including retailers. There isn’t a rule that says only U.S. processors may hold the import rights. On the Canadian side, U.S. dairy under the USMCA cheese quota generally CANNOT go straight to grocery stores. Most of the duty-free import permits are given to Canadian processors & distributors. Retailers are largely shut out of that quota, so a U.S. producer can’t just sell to Loblaws or Walmart Canada the way an EU cheese maker can under CETA. The real split is who is allowed to bring the product in & put it on the shelf.

The US never hits the quota limit because Loblaws and Sobeys know the limit and do not exceed it so they don’t pay 298% tariff on US dairy. It’s not rocket science.

Liar Liar Liar…why does nobody correct these guys!!???

All lies

No one goes over quota because then goods are impossible to sell. Grocery in particular depends on volume to make money, so the biggest players are the most profitable. Quotas guarantee you will never get big, so why waste the effort to develop the market?

If the 200 to 300% rates don’t come into play, why do we need them in the first place? 🤔

This is true however, the gist is that when it comes to dairy, Canada does not have free and fair trade, and this is true also.

Its more about who gets Import Licenses. Retailers only get about 5% of those. Major producers like Saputo and Lactalis get mostly all the permits to import. The US want the same rules we have for Europe, as retailers are free to import dairy from across the pond

What about the Chinese stuff coming in and then rerouted to the US? Can you address that claim, please?

Trade deal will remain difficult as these two countries can’t even agree on the facts. No solutions to be had if you can’t agree on basic facts.

The US taxpayer heavily subsidizes dairy, and the US also has tariff rate quotas. You'll hear none of this from Vance or Trump. Canada just supports dairy differently, by charging consumers more. Neither country has a completely free market in dairy. Epic dishonesty from Vance.

Fact check: USA has TRQ's on dairy, too. As agreed to in USMCA.

The quotas are given to Canadian dairy producers and then they sit in the qoatas. This is literally what New Zealand had been complaining about for years

It's a bit more complicated than that. It's not as simple as "US dairy never meets the USMCA quotas." Most of the TRQs are given to Canadian companies importing "US milk" from their own US subsidiaries and locking out US companies from competing.

You are spewing bullshit now. There is zero chance milk prices in Canada would be double what they are in America without trade barriers. None. Canadians in border towns cross over just to grocery shop (and get gas)! That is not imaginary. It is a function of trade barriers.

Wrong. Do better
