Have you noticed this trend: In the past few years, most new trains introduced by Indian Railways have been either Vande Bharat (premium, short-distance) or Amrit Bharat (non-AC, long-distance for lower fares). But where are the regular long-distance trains? Since COVID, very few new long-distance services have been introduced, and the impact is clearly visible. Getting a confirmed ticket on busy routes has become a nightmare. Instead, we see: • “Special” trains that aren't punctual • Additional halts slowing down existing services • Extensions of current trains instead of introducing new ones This isn’t about opposing Vande Bharat or Amrit Bharat, they serve their purpose well. But what about the millions of long-distance passengers? First time in Indian Railways: 2 Vande Bharat services have been officially discontinued due to low occupancy. In a first for Indian Railways, the Udaipur-Agra Cantt and Udaipur-Jaipur Vande Bharat trains have been withdrawn due to poor patronage. The same rake will now be redeployed as the Udaipur-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat, which is expected to be flagged off soon. I feel this is a great step to utilise resources efficiently. Vande Bharat trains that are running with low occupancy should be discontinued, and the rakes should be tested on alternate routes. What’s your take? #IndianRailways
