Have you noticed this trend: In the past few years, most new trains introduced by Indian Railways have been either Vande Bharat (premium, short-distance) or Amrit Bharat (non-AC, long-distance for lower fares). But where are the regular long-distance trains? Since COVID, very few new long-distance services have been introduced, and the impact is clearly visible. Getting a confirmed ticket on busy routes has become a nightmare. Instead, we see: • “Special” trains that aren't punctual • Additional halts slowing down existing services • Extensions of current trains instead of introducing new ones This isn’t about opposing Vande Bharat or Amrit Bharat, they serve their purpose well. But what about the millions of long-distance passengers? Most long-distance trains today are running over capacity, yet there’s little focus on expanding services, as a rail enthusiast, it’s hard to even recall a significant number of new long-distance trains added in recent years. It’s high time Ministry of Railways prioritizes new long-distance trains on high-demand routes.

First time in Indian Railways: 2 Vande Bharat services have been officially discontinued due to low occupancy. In a first for Indian Railways, the Udaipur-Agra Cantt and Udaipur-Jaipur Vande Bharat trains have been withdrawn due to poor patronage. The same rake will now be redeployed as the Udaipur-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat, which is expected to be flagged off soon. I feel this is a great step to utilise resources efficiently. Vande Bharat trains that are running with low occupancy should be discontinued, and the rakes should be tested on alternate routes. What’s your take? #IndianRailways

Just yesterday, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw decided that the production of these trains would be accelerated at the Central Government's modern railway coach factories, including the ones where Vande Bharat trains are manufactured. The first batch is set to arrive in 2027, and by 2029–30, all of Mumbai's suburban trains will be transformed into clean, modern, air-conditioned trains... It has been decided that the fare for Second Class AC travel will not increase..."

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister said that whatever agenda is put before the House should be given priority over Rule 267. Rule 267 states that all other issues should be kept aside, and first preference should be given to discussion under 267. That's why we've given notice under 267. Keeping aside all other business, the House should prioritise discussion on 267. That is important, and that's why I request you (Chairman of Rajya Sabha) to give us permission to start discussion on 267, regarding the SIR.
