Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea talks about what he told his team when they didn’t make the CFP: “The message was, 'We had control over this ... and we did not do enough.' I think it's really important that we take ownership. ... The world expects us to be... show more

This is what separates the good coaches from the Mike Norvell's and Marcus Freeman's.

Class act!!

Clark Lea basically hit them with the “don’t cry, be accountable” speech every team thinks they live by but almost none actually do. Dude didn’t sugarcoat a thing — straight up told his players “we had the steering wheel and still put the car in a ditch.” And honestly? That’s the mentality fans WANT to hear. No delusion, no excuses, no “the committee robbed us.” Just own it, fix it, and go smash whoever you draw in the bowl game. Teams that talk like this usually come back the next season with a hit list.

Wow mature ND take notes

@NDFootball should learn from @VandyFootball about how to be winners and coach the team through hardships. Notre Dame takes zero ownership and just wants to be a victim. Well, victims don’t recover.

College football needs more Clark Lea's, not Lane Kiffin's. THIS is a football coach.

This is the correct way to respond to not getting into the CFP. Not by calling out the ACC and opting out of your bowl game lol

that's a solid approach. accountability and ownership build resilience

Then why did they campaign for being in the playoff? Pretty odd to now play both sides.

Vandy wasn't led to believe for 5 weeks that they would be in. Love Lea, but this is the right message for his team, not Notre Dame.

The university whose patron is one of the original symbols of American excess shows humility while the Catholic university throws a hissy fit as it clings to football TV revenue. Certainly not the timeline I thought we'd live in.

Love Clark and what he did here at ND & I’ll cheer him on at Vandy unless against ND. But this is easy from their point because they were never at any point in the field to be included. Also they probably have some contract agreement with the SEC to participate, had no choice

Life is full of adversity. Learn to handle it like this guy is teaching his players to do. Tip of the hat coach. Go have fun.

Notre Dame was consistently ranked in the top 10 by the college football playoff committee, and then they pull the rug out from underneath your feet of course you're going to be upset. They make you feel like you have a spot and then they take it away, Vanderbilt never had a spot

Not true. It’s what he’s saying now that ND dropped out of paying in a bowl. But he was begging and pleading every damn day for the committee to let them in / because they deserved it. Now he says they didn’t do enough. Which is it?

Vandy is showing way more maturity than Notre Dame.

Clark Lea should be coach of the year in the SEC. Say what you want but Vandy is not the easiest place to win. Win they did.

Vanderbilt and Coach Lee are a class act! This historic season will get even better with Pavia's Heisman and a Bowl win!👏👍

@NDFootball please take notes

If my kid was a stud recruit, and he couldn't go to OU, I would send him to Vandy and Clark Lea. Sure as hell would not be ND...I hate those whiney pricks.

How refreshing.

hey look someones being logical @NotreDame247

Now THIS is how a head coach establishes a winning locker room culture

That is what a true leader of men says when things dont go his way. Extreme ownership

TBF, Lea was complaining and lobbying all week about how they would happily play another game to show they earned it, the opposite message of "we did not do enough"

This is a real coach right here. Not like the bums who coach at @NDFootball @TexasFootball

Pure Class! 🤴🏼 Go win it!

That's what character looks like. Still love my Vols but now a Vandy fan as well.

Now, THAT is leadership. Take note, ND apologists.

If Vanderbilt was in the top 12 and got jumped last minute by Bama for beating a bad Auburn team, and then watched as Bama got smoked by georgia and was the only team to lose their conference CG and not drop in rankings, they probably would have had a different opinion.

I have a ton more respect for Vanderbilt than Notre Dame. Notre Dame's staff are acting like 12 year olds. Notre Dame's reaction should've been, "Alright we'll play a bowl game and prove our point." Instead it's, "I'm taking my ball and going home !"

That is not just a great coaching job - of keeping your players focused on the right things - it is a great job of leading young men. This is what coaching should look like.

Take notes Notre Dame.

Now I’m a fan of Clark Lea. Too many coaches crying because they didn’t get in the playoff. Take ownership of it even if maybe you would have made some noise in the tournament. While at the beginning of the year everything is in front of you. Great season for Vanderbilt though
