Bryan Caplan’s research shows the bulk of what employers pay for is the proof you sat still, followed rules, and finished the obstacle course. Once enough people clear that bar the credential stops separating anyone, so employers just raise the requirement and demand the next level up. The same jobs that only needed a high school diploma in 1940 now routinely ask for three extra years of school even though the actual work barely changed. The result is more debt, more wasted years, and degrees that mean less than they used to. Caplan’s solution is to cut the subsidies that keep the arms race going and expand real vocational training so people stop buying years of expensive paper they never needed. The education system has turned into a costly status competition that leaves most of us worse off, and we still push kids into it like it’s the only path that exists.
