For some of us alcohol is an escape from uncomfortable feelings that we have about ourselves, or an escape from just feeling uncomfortable in the presence of others. The true work in sobriety is about being comfortable as yourself. When you start to genuinely like and accept who you are, you no longer want escape yourself or create someone new to serve others. Anyone that’s on this journey , I just want to reassure you that if you put the work in, really start to better yourself, really start to understand what it is you feel uncomfortable about yourself , as your self-esteem and self-respect grows so will your ability to truly be yourself and not care who likes the true version of you, because you like yourself and that will be enough. My highlight of the week: helicopter-under water escape training 🌊🚁 After returning from space, astronauts typically land with their spacecraft in the ocean. We are retrieved by an incredible team of Flight Surgeons and Crew Support Officers, who pick us up by helicopter and bring us safely back to land. And as always, we also prepare for things that might go wrong there. Training to escape from a capsized helicopter is essential not only for astronauts, but for the entire crew involved. In the event of an emergency water landing, the team only has a few seconds to get out -helicopters are top-heavy, so they can overturn and sink quickly. To prepare us for every possible scenario, the instructors challenged us in all kinds of ways: tinted goggles that block visibility, climbing out through a different window than the one next to us, escaping without using our emergency air supply, and more. All of it designed to help us stay calm and focused - no matter what might happen in an emergency. Don’t wake up at 50 (or 60) and realize you’re no closer to your best life than when you started. 👉 Treat your job as a means, not an end. Slowly—over years and decades—gain more control. Become the person you are on vacation. That’s the real you. Now you’ve got a life you don’t need to escape. (P.S. I’m not talking about living a life of leisure. Humans need work and skin in the game. The goal isn’t to retire—it’s to choose your work and do it on your terms. That’s as good as it gets.)
