Cancer touches all of our lives, and for many of us, we know a friend or loved one that has been affected by breast cancer. In my mid 40s I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My experience pushed me to campaign to help other breast cancer sufferers, and eventually led me to Parliament. My message to all women is don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid to check for any changes, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and don’t be afraid to speak to your friends and family. Mostly, ‘know your boobs’. This was a statement lifted from the Lancet Breast Cancer Commission Report published yesterday - but it’s a global estimate that assumes EVERY woman in EVERY country has an average of 6 children and breastfeeds them for 1-2 years. The facts - breastfeeding one child for 12 months reduces your lifetime risk of breast cancer by 4% That’s a drop from 17% to 16.4% - so the actual impact is small. 131 MPs have now signed my motion to stand up for trans people and stop the EHRC's Draft Code of Practice coming into force. For it to succeed, the motion needs to be debated and voted on, so I asked the government if it will allocate time. Unfortunately the Leader of the House did not make that commitment. We will continue to press for a debate and a vote. Please encourage your MP to sign EDM 240.
