Very interesting points about Gen Z and Millennials

Here in Britain, Gen X had a grand total of 3 TV channels (which grew to 4 in 1982). The monoculture was real: we had no choice but to learn about Buster Keaton, Laurel & Hardy, black and white films, etc. And I feel more and more glad about that as time goes on.

This is good point but I think it’s also the aspect of being exposed via family, community etc. putting you onto things. When they’re kid/early teens you can really shape these avenue for them to explore but nowadays online/social media has a tighter grip then immediate circles

I also think the parents don’t sit down like ours did and watch old tv shows listen to older music and tell stories. This generation isn’t interested in the history of whatever they’re getting into they just figure that there’s nothing the past can teach them or it’s not necessary.

VH1 and MTV did retrospectives on Top 100 songs ever etc. Same with ESPN and AMC for athletes and movies. Gen Z has nothing like this.

It’s all thanks to older siblings and cousins + VH1’s “I Love The” series that covered most of the pop culture from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s

In other words they are inundated with so much modern trash they have zero appreciation for anything of worth.

All of this is true. But they also generally despise anything "before I was born"

One thing I think about as a parent of young kids is how they wont have a shared TV experience with their peers. My kids dont watch TV, or theyll watch cartoons on youtube. A lot from the 90s. It’s so decentralized I dont see how their gen. could have a shared experience.

This is largely inaccurate. He’s basically arguing Gen X and Y are more media literate because of access. But…Gen Z and Alpha have the same if not better access to media. doesn’t add up. The real explanation comes from overindulgence in social media. The addiction is real.

I’m a 2001 born gen z and I do agree that a lot of my generation is uncultured but I’m VERY cultured on pop culture,hip hop culture & music cause I was raised by Gen X parents(b.1970/1971) a Gen X aunt (b.1976) millennial cousins & MTV,VH1,BET & Fuse TV programs &award shows lol

This Gen Z here grew up watching Shirley Temple, Three Stooges. Mr Rodger’s neighborhood, but I also know Zenon, was obsessed with the Spice Girls, I know music before my time. I just didn’t get to experience it as it was actually happening.

Bruh it doesn’t take a 3 mins video to understand our parents believed in tradition and make sure you knew about the greats I was introduced to MJ at 8 my mom played music from 60-70s when we cleaned we also had VH1 classic and MTV playing music from the 80s on Sundays til 12

Why is everyone acting as if gen z didn't experience TV and cable TV? A huge chunk of gen zs know HBO and it's other channels prior to having an app. All you can see was countless reruns and if you want to see the good stuff, you'd need to stay up late

This was great a makes a lot of sense. I remember watching cartoons and once they went off I love Lucy would come on lol. I was 7 watching I love Lucy or bewitched. My lil sister was younger than me and I remember 3 is company was her favorite show when she was like 6 lolo

Between that and being co-raised by members of large families spanning from the silent generation through to the young boomers, we got a good dose of decades worth of pop culture. Like my dad was born in 42 so I got 40 yrs of prior pop culture experience by the time I was 10.

I was like 12 when Johnny Carson retired and even Conan had an old Hollywood style. Jimmy Fallon does too, but now our pop culture adapts to youth.

It’s kinda true for some of Gen Z. But I think it’s pretty different depending if you’re older Gen Z or younger.

Modern day content is trash ....you can still watch old shows and movies...a lot of them are excellent It's convenient for governments that this modern generation has very little cultural references to anything other than what's recent Makes society MUCH easier to manipulate

Gen Alpha point is so dumb. they're all literal children or babies. And plenty of zoomers are still literal children too.

I miss going to video stores and just browsing the aisles for a movie. Somehow even though there was so much to watch it took me less time to pick something out than scrolling the different streaming companies

Gen Z likes more short form television so they’re not seeking out big TV show shows whereas Gen y had the entire catalog available to them Gen X like myself had Nick at Nite
