VGC players, please help us understand how Outrage can fail here. Garchomp is Focus Sashed. Eelektross is obvi a Mega. No protect on either this turn. Their Garchomp's Outrage failed. Didn't say missed. Said failed. We're very confused! #pokemonchampions

I never found the root cause but I did find a set up that caused Outrage to fail (not sure if patched since April): My best guess is due to a time out late in a set.

This fits 100%. They were playing super slow and there is a chance they timed out into an auto select of Outrage. Wondering if they dc'ed

This has to be a bug I have never seen that, do you have the extended clip to see when you select the move? Would love to see the entire turn/ battle

It was the opposing garchomp so I don't have their POV. I do have the entire battle recorded from my end but the info doesn't change so I clipped it down to save time

miss-clicked and targeted their Gyarados. Outrage can’t target its partner Pokemon

This must be a bug, there's nothing on the field that could cause outrage to fail like that. Because outrage selects its target randomly the game makes you target yourself on the target select window, so maybe something went wrong and garchomp actually tried to target itself???

That's the only thing I can think of too. Tbh they were playing SLOW so I'm wondering if they d/ced and the bot that takes over can't use outrage due to some bug etc? Very weird niche situation.

What other info can I provide to help? I have the whole vod but can't think of anything else that would matter besides the current turn's events + held item info

The thing is... Was garchomp confused?

In theory in older games, you used outrage and 2-3 turns later, you get confused. When confused, you can attack with outrage again if you want, but obviously if you get confused, you hit yourself (which didn't happen).

No disabled moves, garchomp had leftovers so no choice scarf either. I'm confusion 😭

Champions has a lot of bugs, typical of ILCA I guess considering they kept all the Diamond and Pearl bugs in BDSP

I possibly have an answer, but it's kinda complicated so here's the lite version: The move failed because the opponent timed out and the Garchomp targeted ITSELF with the Outrage! I'll put an explanation down below as replies

I think I might have seen it fail just once in all those years of playing besides this clip tbh. 😳 Just a few times it has missed my Pokémon as a target. 😅

It was such a weird move to see in a champions battle in the current meta, then to see it fail?! Definitely needed a moment to recalibrate the brain cell

It’s a weird interaction between making the garchomp flinch. But anytime outrage is disrupted it’ll say failed

I’ve seen weird bugs in this game like rotom heat not being weak to water moves

Every time I've seen something like that it's always Zoroark but I'd believe bugs too tbh

I’m reading the move descriptions, and in Legends AZ, it says Outrage goes on cooldown, but doesn’t confuse the user now.

I had a similar issue where I used yawn and it just failed. I was very confused

Weeeeird. Like, it would be one thing if it said missed or something else. But failed unless something else was taking sleep's spot (another status) is strange.

They were playing VERY slow so maybe it was a time out! Weird that that would make Outrage fail though. Strange bug. Thank you for the info! 🖤
