Vibe-coded a proof of concept for a visual scripting solution in Godot. I know it’s rough, but I think there are some interesting ideas here. It supports accelerator keys, so you can just press V → I to declare an integer, then F → R to call the _ready...

Reminds me of the Godot Block Coding plugin.

Yeah this is more for learning.

Gamedev is most fun when you get to try & learn new stuff.

I dig it, kinda scratch like?

Less abstracted, it's a visual representation of GD Script.

building a visual scripting system that's just a node / flow graph representation of code is pointless. it doesn't scale, it's barely easier to use than gdscript, it's more cumbersome to write and, since you are already using ai, 100 times more difficult for ai to reason about

this resembles gamemaker's drag and drop more than UE's blueprints and drag and drop was always a little bit shit.

looks very similar to scratch :D

hope this will have continue. Coding by hotkeys can make visual scripting place to live (Will be very cool if we can have gdscript and visaul blocks converter not non binary file like in unreal which broking git)

Reminds me of the action script helper in flash mx back in the days before adobe removed it.

This could probably be adapted into a quite useful NPC AI addon if you had a bunch of predefined useful behaviours. The UI looks a lot more compact and easier to parse than behaviour trees.

Isn't it literally just coding with extra steps? It looks almost like writing the actual code

For me GD Script is high level enough, I just wanted to turn syntax into UI so you can start coding with having to memorize it. There are many benefits to this: you can follow a GD Script tutorial while using blocks, you can convert an existing codebase and as a beginner you are going to subconsciously learn code. Not to mention that performance is the same as GD Script because this is GD Script. I don't see the extra steps you are mentioning, this can potentially be 3x faster than typing code using accelerator keys.

hmm ok ok. I'm not convinced but also I'm not the target audience! If it works for people that's the important point

It's cool if people like it! I'm wondering if it's a false sense of ease that drives peopel towards "visual" coding. I've not done any research so I don't know.

I feel like the appeal is that you can start to mess around immediately without knowing anything about programming.

Like it gives structure? Whereas text is almost too open if you don't know the syntax? I felt that when learning shaders in blender. The limits imposed by the nodes would help me figure out what could be plugged to what

Exactly that and also you don't get an error for missing a ":"

NO BUT HIS IDEA SO BRILLIANT? 👑: i already talked about it and gave hints to yeodoongies, right? so, it was almost at the final completion stage, but then the price came out. and it ended up being a bit higher than i expected. since i really wanted this item to be practical and actually useful for yeodoongies, i designed it with that in mind—and because of those extra details, the unit cost ended up a bit higher than i first thought 👑: so i thought, “wouldn’t this be a bit too much of a burden for yeodoongies?” that’s why i just decided to scrap it and changed to something else instead 💬: then just give me the one you scrapped 👑: ㅎㅎㅎ ah, that one was actually—well, i guess i can just say it now anyway. actually, i was thinking of a keyboard. the idea for that keyboard was something like i wanted to put hehetmon face on the keyboard—what should i call it? on the keycaps, like emojis. and then, you know those keyboards that don't make that loud clicking sound? not like mechanical keyboards, but ones that sound like asmr... ah, silent! but even though it's silent, it has that, you know—that “sagak-sagak” sound when you press the keys. yeah, you’re right! like “tuduk-tuduk” sound! i had that kind of keyboard in mind and tried to make it happen. but the unit cost ended up being higher than i expected. and i thought, this is a bit too much— i know our yeodoongies would want to have it no matter what, but if the price is this high, it’ll be such a burden on yeodoongies. so, i just made the call to scrap it and switched to something else

🔌Today I created a virtual web-based null modem so now you can finally play Quake 1 (from 1996) in multiplayer in the browser with other people online! This week I was able to create a virtual printer that listens on the COM2 port to make a web-based printer work in Windows 3.11, like on you can actually print to, it was one of my ideas when I started but it was always too difficult to make, I had no idea where to start, but this week AI was able to do it! Today I woke up and thought "if we can listen to COM2 via JS, how about listen to COM1 from Quake 1?" then we could forward the COM1 data via Websockets and to another user to create a virtual null modem (A null modem was a cable you'd use to connect two computers to each other directly in the 90s, if you couldn't afford buying a network card you'd use this to network, but you could only play with one other computer not multiple) So I built it, it took about an hour and works! I wanted to get Quake 1 in DOS to work with multiplayer for 2 years but I could never get it to work, but now it did it This project is a good benchmark of how capable AI is becoming, figuring stuff out that humans would take months within an hour You can try it here, I don't know how it will match lots of people but let's see, you have to exit to DOS first (ALT-F4 or FN-Option-F4 on Mac), then type CD games, then CD quake, then quake, then ESC, then Multiplayer, then either Create New Game or Join Game, and use Direct Connect, keep settings same and you're in!

Q: How will I know when it’s the right time to go full-time on a startup idea? Tony Fadell is the co-creator of the iPod, iPhone, and Nest. As he puts it in the clip below: “Great ideas chase you.” He continues: “In this world, there are so many people who have more ideas than they have time to implement… I used to be like that. But the best ideas are the ones that you can really focus on… Now I try to run away from a great idea. And then it stalks me. It hunts you down because you’re like: ‘Ah, that’s going to have this problem, I’m going to put it aside.’ And then a few days later, you’re like: ‘Actually I think I know how to solve that problem.’ At some point it just becomes this black hole that sucks you in and you can’t think about anything else but this.” Mark Zuckerberg gave similar advice in a previous Startup Archive answer: “I always think the most important thing entrepreneurs should do is pick something they care about and work on it, but don’t actually commit to turning it into a company until it’s working. If you look at the data of the very best companies, I think a tremendous percentage of them have been built that way and not from people who decided upfront that they wanted to start a company because you just get locked into a local maxima a lot of the time.” Let great ideas chase you and don’t turn it into a company until it’s working. There’s almost always a ton of work you you can do upfront to de-risk an idea before turning it into a company. And perhaps just as important: you want to make sure you’re still excited about the idea after a few months and the novelty has worn off—it should be all you can think about. Companies are almost always a 10 year project if they work and a 2-3 year project if they fail. It’s worth it to be patient before jumping in with two feet.

Christmas can be a wonderful time of year but it can also be incredibly tough for people. For so many reasons it can actually be the toughest. There is happiness everywhere and an abundance of excess to be had everywhere you look. I know it’s a time when i always struggled when I was drinking and battling other addictions and demons. It can seem like you are alone. That the whole world is against you. How can everybody be so happy yet here you are feeling so worthless, down or panic ridden. I just wanted to say that you are not alone and millions of others have the same issues. The most remarkable thing I ever got for Christmas was a phone call just before I went into ICU. It was a simple humble an unexpected call from someone checking in. It’s why I think it’s important to remember that it’s not designer handbags, PlayStations or iPads that make this time of year. It could be a simple detour to see someone. A 10 minute chat with an old friend that means the world to them. Swallowing your pride to say sorry to someone. It’s the little things. The checking in to let someone know they are not alone. As for me I’m sad and missing Derek and Jumbo is very ill beside me as I write this but I’m also optimistic. I’ve lots of dogs to look after, I’m forcing myself to be social and have not 1 but 2 Christmas meals with friends and I love the life I have. I’m lucky and humble about that now because it wasn’t always that way. Maybe one person who needs to see this will. It’s just a time of year. If you are having it tough you are not alone. If you are doing well yourself have a little check in with somebody you know probably needs it 🙏🥰

⭐️: You’re asking if I have any worries these days? Well… there is something. Anyway, a lot of people have come to recognize us now, and I think things have gone really well for us. But I do have some personal concerns. Now that everything has gone so well, I do find myself wondering, “Just how much of a person am I, really?” Of course, Ateez has done really well, but when it comes to things like the members’ individual recognition—I don’t know what to call it, recognition, I guess—I do think about how I can make up for that on my end. What do I need to work harder at so that all of us can look good together? I do think about things like that. Anyway, we’ve been through everything together for eight years, but even then, everyone’s pace is different. So the healthy way I think about it is, “What can I do here? What can I do right now?” Once I’ve done everything I can, I think the rest is out of my hands So I really believe in the saying “jininsa daechonmyeong”: Do everything you can, and leave the rest to fate. I really believe in that and live by it. There was a time like that, too. There was a day when I felt really down. I think it was about three years ago. And even then, I thought the same thing: “Don’t get frustrated here. Just do what I can do right now, what’s right in front of me.” So I kept doing what I could, like working out, and I didn’t let go of that dream. I just kept doing what I was supposed to do. Then, less than a month later, a really good opportunity came to me. So I thought, “If I don’t give up and I keep doing my best, good opportunities really do come naturally. Opportunities come to people who are prepared.” And now Ateez is doing well again, and there are members who are seeing even more of the spotlight. I’m also receiving a lot of love, but when I think about it in terms of being recognized by the general public, I still think, “What is there that I can do here?” Honestly, there isn’t that much we can do. We just work hard at dancing and singing, work hard at filming, take care of our bodies, eat well, sleep well, and communicate with our fans often. That’s about it. There are probably a lot of schedules and things like that that people don’t see, but I think that if I just work hard at the things I can do, maybe I’ll be able to do well again, and maybe there’ll be even better results. The ironic thing is, that’s how I think about it these days. In the past, if you wanted to become famous, you would go on TV, do shoots, film things, do photo shoots, things like that. But these days, and I feel a little cautious saying this, you have to already be famous to be able to go on those shows. Anyway, those people also care about the results, so I completely understand it. And we’re not a huge company, either. So it’s not like we can just get ourselves placed on those shows. Was that too honest? We want to go on them. But even if we say, “We want to go on, please let us go on,” it doesn’t mean that’s enough to make it happen. So I think it’s a pretty difficult situation. Still, because we’ve done well, there are now members who can go on better programs than before. And then, within that, I find myself thinking about these things again. But I think I’m doing well. I think I’ve done well up until now, and I’ll continue to do well going forward. So I trust myself. So I wouldn’t really call it a worry. Maybe I should call it a worry where the answer is already there. The answer is already decided, so I’m not worried about it, but it is still something I think about. You know how they say, “A slight difference in wording can make a big difference”? It’s kind of like that.
