also shout out to my dad for spelling my name wrong 🤣

does this replay as poorly in another app like VLC or Iina? I’d see if a transcode won’t fix, since it could just be a frame interpolation issue

FMPEG (CLI tool) may be able to salvage it if the video file has the data (just incorrectly encoded)

Maybe try handbrake to reencode the video?

Can you post the file somewhere and let us run some experiments? Id first want to just see how far we can get with ffmpeg frame analysis and transcoding or finding the source of the “rot” during playback, if that doesn’t yield anything then… it’s ai /upscaling time. But I agree its peculiar that during scrubbing it would appear fine and then on play, its seems to start to fall apart. Feel free to DM

It’s interesting, do you know where these were stored that got these frames issues ? I am guessing they were not like this originally right ? VHS probably gone by now to re digitalize ? As others suggested I would try re encoding or converting. I asked ChatGPT Plus and gave some nice suggestions; Yes, there are several tools—AI-powered and traditional—that could help Sara recover or repair old videos with corruption or bitrot issues. Here are the most relevant options: ⸻ 1. Topaz Video AI (Windows/Mac) •What it does: Uses AI to restore damaged frames, reduce jitter, stabilize motion, and upscale old footage. •Why it’s helpful here: If the video can be scrubbed and frames are visible, Topaz can interpolate or enhance the good ones to fix the corrupted sequences. •Pro tip: Try exporting a frame sequence (image sequence) and let Topaz reassemble it with interpolation between frames. ⸻ 2. FFmpeg (free, technical) •What it does: Command-line tool that can re-encode and sometimes recover playable parts of corrupted video files. •Command to try: ffmpeg -err_detect ignore_err -i corrupted_video.mp4 -c copy recovered_output.mp4 •Why it’s helpful: Might bypass broken GOPs (groups of pictures) and salvage whatever is still readable. ⸻ 3. VLC Media Player Repair Option •What it does: VLC sometimes prompts to “repair” AVI files on opening. •Why it’s helpful: Can preview or convert AVI/MOV/MP4 files and might fix indexing issues. •Extra Tip: Use “Convert/Save” feature to re-export the file cleanly. ⸻ 4. Stellar Repair for Video •What it does: Commercial software to repair severely corrupted video files. •Why it’s helpful: Especially good with broken MP4/MOV files from phones or cameras. ⸻ 5. AI Upscaling and Frame Interpolation Tools If the corrupted frames are too broken to salvage but you can extract some decent frames: •Use tools like: •Dain-App – AI-based frame interpolation. •Flowframes – Simple GUI for frame interpolation. •Approach: Export visible frames as an image sequence, interpolate missing ones with DAIN/Flowframes, and reassemble. ⸻ Suggested Process for Sara: 1.Backup the corrupted video. it in FFmpeg or VLC to see if re-encoding can fix playback issues. 3.If not, extract visible frames with FFmpeg or a tool like Shutter Encoder. 4.Use Topaz Video AI to enhance or interpolate the image sequence. 5.Reassemble using DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere, or FFmpeg. ⸻ Would you like me to give Sara a one-click beginner guide using Topaz or FFmpeg to try a basic recovery?

Does it do this when played on other types of devices?

Someone recently did this to all the old LTT YouTube videos as the same thing happens to old YouTube clips too given the site is now 20 years old

Do you have the tapes? Is it on the tapes? If so, unfortunately cannot be restored as it's a product of dirty tape heads in the camera AI might be able to fill in the frames but it would be generating it
