This porous forest belt ultimately empties into Gundumi forest in Eastern Sokoto State, creating one of the most extensive hideouts for non-state armed groups in the region. For years, security agencies have struggled to contain the mobility advantage that terrorists enjoy from this natural cover. The absence of permanent surveillance, combined with the sheer size and density of the terrain, makes the forests a ready sanctuary for staging attacks, retreating with hostages, and moving weapons.
