#WATCH | Kolkata, West Bengal: On hearing in Calcutta High Court on the petitions filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) in connection with the probe agency's recent raids on the premises of I-PAC, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee says, "ED counsel sought for an adjournment because the matter is pending before the Supreme Court. I clearly stated that I am appearing on behalf of Mamata Banerjee as the Chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress, and not as the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Secondly, we have stated that blame has been made against the court in this Special Leave Petition (SLP). Thirdly, we have said that we are ready to proceed with the case. The case should be heard... The court has recorded that since the ED has sought time on the ground that the Special Leave Petition is pending, i.e., requested an adjournment, and the lawyers for the respondents have stated that they are ready to participate in the hearing of the case, the matter has been adjourned until the SLP is disposed of by the Supreme Court..."

Holder: The Supreme Court is a broken institution. And it’s something that has to be part of the national conversation in ’26 and in ’28. If there is a Democratic trifecta in 2028—and I think the possibility of that is pretty good—Supreme Court reform has to be on the table. Term limits, at a minimum, and potentially expanding the Court are things that should be seriously considered. We cannot leave in place, without at least a discussion—and I think without substantive reforms being implemented—the Supreme Court as it is presently constituted.

Because the mainstream media is reporting on the court case in a different way, they are reporting that our petition has been dismissed. This is wrong in itself... The TMC's claim in the High Court was that this circular is wrong... the High Court said that this circular is correct. When we came to the Supreme Court, we decided that we would not challenge the circular. But we will request the Supreme Court to implement it... The circular states that the EC has received information from many places that there are going to be some problems in every booth during the election... This is why the EC has decided that every booth will have a nominee from the central government..." He adds, "We stated in the Supreme Court that their own circular says if you want to keep a nominee from the central government, then do so, but keep a nominee from the state government as well. We are here because people didn't fully understand why their votes counted. Why sitting out elections has consequences, and how voting based on excitement is harmful. Now here we are, with not only a conservative Supreme Court, but a Supreme Court hell-bent on taking away progress. Voting Rights Act ensured that Black people had a voice. That we were represented. The Supreme Court has limited it. This does not mean stop voting. It means that we have to register more people to vote, we have to overwhelm the system. #DemsUnited

They are merely a shell of their original selves Blanche: He is very frustrated. He has every right, and indeed, he should communicate his concerns with the Supreme Court whenever he has them. This isn't the first time that he's done it, and it won't be the last. He's also publicly very appreciative of the Supreme Court when when there's decisions that he very much agrees with—that's what a democracy is about
