Some time ago, we had decided that we would modernise the trains and coaches of Mumbai’s suburban railway. Just like modern trains, our Mumbai suburban railway... should also have good, clean, modern and air-conditioned coaches. A decision was taken in this regard, but it was taking time. Yesterday, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw decided that these trains and coaches would now be manufactured rapidly at three of the Central Government’s modern railway coach factories, where Vande Bharat trains are being manufactured. The first series will arrive in 2027, and by 2029–30, all of Mumbai’s suburban trains will be beautiful, clean and air-conditioned, like metro trains. There will be no increase (in fares). It’s amazing that the GOI has woken up to this after decades. Moderm Metro trains arrived in India in 2000; Mumbai got its first Metro 12 years ago. Yet Mumbai’s suburban rail—the city’s lifeline—that already had a network spanning its entire length was neglected. Had they planned better and transformed suburban into a Metro-like system, the government could have helped millions of Mumbaikars travel in comfort much earlier. The mad, unruly, third-world rush we see today at stations would have been history. Even after this announcement, the dream remains far away. But let’s keep dreaming anyway.

Excellent decision. We should invest more in production of coaches and add more trains on different local lines. More importantly, @CMOMaharashtra should clear all illegal encroachment and slums on railway property, all along the tracks. These slums are not only areas of open defecation but pose high security threat besides being hub for drug peddlers and other illicit activities.

@Dev_Fadnavis @RailMinIndia Sir I wish to put forward another request to improve the current congestion situation in Thane Rly. Station due to huge rail traffic and passenger load. I suggest to build up another Station between Mulund and Thane Stations, near Metro Line 4 for inter-connection.
