Playing time is the ultimate motivator Every program has their non negotiables, and within the program each player has a certain role that they need to crush. A lot of players and parents struggle with the idea that you don’t get unlimited mistakes and chances. At some point, if you aren’t producing, you won’t be able to play. This will happen to 95% of players.. whether it’s for a couple possessions, for a couple games, or for a season. The real tell is the players ability to learn from it and grow!

DOESN’T MATTER HOW SKILLED YOU ARE… IF YOU DON’T IMPACT WINNING! This is a big conversation I have with High School Coaches and parents. There are a lot of players that work year round on skill development but they don’t learn and/or be held accountable to the sacrifice, focus, energy, effort it takes to be a winning player for their team.

If you want more context…. Here’s Phee’s FULL comments, echoing what many players and coaches have all said: “The game is too physical right now. I think that’s been a complaint of players and coaches alike for the past several years. We’ve been compared to the NBA of the 80s, in just our physicality. And I do think that hinders the players obviously. You come to watch players play offense and to score. When it’s so physical, the game is not fun to watch and it’s not fun to play.” How did it get so physical? “I mean, we want to win. If the rules allow, we’re gonna kill each other to get there. I just think the rules need to change in that regard so it’s safety for others and a better experience for the fans as well.” Changes to reffing or different rules? “I think it’s both. I think consistency in reffing is the no.1 thing that we ask for every year. I think the game right now is catered to the defensive player, Because you always hear ‘defense wins championships’ and it does but, in my opinion, it should be catered to the offensive player, because that’s why you play basketball. ARE 1 ON 0 WORKOUTS THE BEST WAY TO TRAIN? I moved away from 1 on 0 workouts a long time ago. They are great if the player has a specific technical need. It allows you to slow down and dive deep with the player. Other than that… multi player workouts are exponentially more productive and beneficial for the players. This allows them to still work on technical skill, but it allows you to put them in an environment where they have to read multiple players on the court- exactly how the game will be. Add in the fact that it forces players to compete and it’s a no brainer!

SCARED TO COACH YOUR BEST PLAYER? If you are scared to coach your best player because they may leave, you are doing the rest of your players a disservice. Players will leave their HS, AAU, and College teams for a million different reasons. That is the basketball landscape today. But not holding them accountable or coaching them hard isn’t going to stop them from leaving.

It’s shocking because it’s going to play out this way because this scenario at this point in the season helps nobody. I’m not blaming BA, I’m not blaming the 49ers, but I think BA coming back and doing his best to play as well as he can helps the 49ers and it helps Brandon Aiyuk. I think the position of Brandon Aiyuk not playing anymore this season doesn’t help anybody. If BA doesn’t play this season and he gets cut at the end of the year, that does nothing to help anybody. I think if he doesn’t play, that’s the most likely scenario, but I just don’t understand why that would be the case. Why you would make the decision as a player? Everybody has their own reasons for doing things, but if you’re a player and you want out, your interests are aligned unfortunately.
