Virtually nothing Square Enix releases meets its nebulous expectations. On my recent appearance on Click R3, I ranted about one of my favorite publisher's chronic inability to economically forecast its own games, many of which are ironically of the highest quality and caliber.

They make no sense. FF16 sold faster than re4 and re3 remake on one platform. It sold better than kh3 and multiple other 3rd party AAA games like avatar and star wars but somehow all their games are failures?

Yep. Square Enix is terrible at this. And this is not something new. 10+ years of bad forecasting, even when sales are good. I.e. Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

FF15 sold around 10 million units over 6 years with a much bigger console install base PS4 80% Xbox 11% PC 9% FF16 sold 3mil in 1 week on PS5. It’s most likely around 4 now. Maybe the PC version sells another 500k 🤷‍♂️ Square need PlayStation way more than any other platform.

This is exactly right. When has a square enix game in recent memory ever “met expectations”

Yea i been a Square fans for the longest and their expectation of sales is really confusing….i think they believe FF franchise is on the level of a GoW or Halo or a Mario imo but JRPGs always been a niche genre even more today…i think JRPGs selling btw 5M-7M is successful

The way they frame it is that both FF7R and FF16 met financial expectations But then later they go on and say that "HD" Games did not meet expectations when you add in Forspoken and Foamstars Like, duh, of course. They even admitted they need to stop greenlighting these projects.

Yes and they can no longer blame the Tomb Raider team on their failures lol

Square games just lost mass appeal. When you put "7" and "Remake" / "Rebirth" in the title of your biggest, most expensive franchise and you limit it to one platform, you immediately loose "mass appeal".

It's like they can't comprehend basic math. Like comparing the sales numbers to a game released on both PS4 and PS5 (Final Fantasy 7 Remake) and the. Thinking Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was going to sell just as well or more bring a PS5 exclusive.
