The production bought a decommissioned aircraft and filmed the crash practically in a single massive stunt. This is how a thunderstorm looks in starfield. I had to go to the pond to check for rain drop effects...the raindrop effect was there, but only in the pond... the entire world was dry. None of the npcs had umbrellas or anything to stay dry. Bethesda just added rain and wind sound effects with no sound for thunder and no water effects on anything other than water. This is starfield.... This is xbox.

When they blew up the Deeping Wall, this wasn’t just CGI, Peter Jackson’s team blew it up for real! They rigged the 1/4-scale miniature with practical explosives and pyrotechnics, then detonated it on camera! This is why it looks so good! The team had no choice but to get it right as they only had one shot at it. The breach was enhanced with VFX for those wider shots, but the main destruction was due to old school pyrotechnics.

It's no secret that Michael Bay likes to shoot his films with as much practical effects as possible. In #Transformers (2007) there is a shot where Optimus Prime and Megatron crash through a building, this shot was done practically using a miniature at 1/4 scale by ILM. Doing this shot practically allowed them to get the randomness of the destruction without having to do expensive simulations. The CG robots were then added into the shot to merge the photographic plate with the CG elements. When doing live-action films, it is always a good idea to shoot physically as much as possible. This provides the VFX artists with real world reference to ground their work in and allows them to compliment the shot with CG elements. One of the reasons the original Transformers trilogy looks so good is because of the incredible blend of practical and digital effects. It is difficult to watch the film and spot what is real and what is CG. ILM VFX Supervisor Scott Farrar talks through how this scene was pulled off:

A big part of our success was thanks to our in-house visual effects team led by VFX Supervisor Mark Savela. Check out this EVA chasm jump sequence from Stargate: Atlantis's "Adrift" featuring Sheppard and Zelenka. It was shot in what we coined, appropriately enough, the VFX stage - home to the village set, some Atlantis interiors, and the hive ship.
