Looks like the way some types of lava can harden. As someone who grew up in Hawaii, and spent time at Kilauea, there are many different kinds of lava. The runnier” kind hardens differently than the very slow moving lava, for example. Some lava you can walk alongside and poke sticks in, and others you don’t want to be anywhere near
