Each life saved is part of a much bigger story — one of a species being brought back from the brink. Black rhinos are a critically endangered species. Here in Kenya, they suffered a catastrophic 98% decline between 1970 and 1983, as poaching decimated their population from 20,000 to just 350 in just over a decade. But today, Kenya’s black rhinos are growing in number. Orphans like Chamboi — who will rejoin Tsavo’s wild rhino population when he is ready — represent the future. This evening stroll reminded us of a similar scene from exactly a year ago: Chamboi has grown outwards and Twiggy upwards over the past 12 months, but they still enjoy each other’s company enormously! For animals without fur, mud is essential skincare. A good coating seals moisture into the skin, blocks biting insects, and protects against the Kenyan sun. At our Kaluku Neonate Unit, orphan rhino Chamboi took his mud baths seriously as a baby, helped by his Keepers who gave him personalised pampering sessions. Today, Chamboi is older and bigger, though his Keepers still shovel mud over his body as he reclines in his wallow. It's a treat for this growing bull who is gradually lessening his dependence on his carers, one mud bath at a time. Discover Chamboi's rescue story and recovery journey:
