In 1953, Paramount Pictures sent Audrey Hepburn to Paris to personally select some costumes for the film Sabrina, in which she played the lead role. In fact, the film's official costume designer was Edith Head, a Hollywood fashion icon who had received dozens of Oscar nominations and numerous awards. But the studio's decision was logical: according to the plot, the main character was a poor, awkward American girl who went to the fashion capital to study and returned home radiant. Therefore, her wardrobe had to be designed by a high-fashion French designer. Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy first met in Paris. The actress later recalled: "Everything I saw in his work fascinated me—he created dresses that perfectly suited me." Their acquaintance began almost by chance. Givenchy was expecting to meet another actress—Katharine Hepburn—and was surprised when a petite woman in simple trousers and a T-shirt walked into his workshop. At the time, he didn't have time to design new costumes: he was preparing for his first collection. So, Hubert suggested Audrey choose an outfit from his existing collection. Among them was that very dress—white, with a wide, flowing skirt embroidered in black silk and featuring a detachable train. In the film, the dress appears in a crucial scene where Sabrina transforms from an awkward girl into the embodiment of elegance. The Givenchy dress played a vital role in this effect, which continues to amaze audiences to this day. Interestingly, in 1955, the film "Sabrina" won an Oscar for Best Costume Design, but the award went to Edith Head – even though she only designed one dress for the lead actress, the one Sabrina wears at the beginning of the film. Givenchy's name was not mentioned at the awards ceremony or in the credits. Furthermore, due to the high cost of the costumes, the studio required Audrey to pay a portion of the cost herself – they effectively became part of her personal wardrobe.
