Was analyzing the “Kirby Smart timeout” situation while watching film this morning. Kirby Smart was NOT trying to convince the refs he was clapping instead of calling for a timeout. Smart was telling the officials that Auburn was clapping on defense. The announcers didn’t portray it that way. So...

After reviewing the Kirby Smart timeout deal… Auburn DB was clapping (simulated snap). Smart wanted a penalty and was clapping to official but eventually called a timeout. Head ref knew clapping should be a flag so he didn’t charge timeout. Ball reset.

I rewatched the Kirby timeout sequence. Kirby calls timeout. Then tells the ref that Auburn was clapping. “They can’t clap! They can’t clap!” Points to Auburn: “They’re clapping!” Ref weirdly overturns the timeout call. Broadcast assumes Kirby said he didn’t call timeout.
