The Metro Nashville public school district has become more of a community of English learners in the last six years. At Mt. View Elementary, one of the largest elementary schools in the district, English learners account for about 60% of the 900 students. To better serve the growing number of multilingual students, school leaders and English-learner coaches encouraged teachers to move to a co-teaching model, in which a general-education teacher and an English-learner teacher lead a classroom together. This video shows more about how this model works for teachers and how it helps English learners succeed.

For decades, teachers have spent their own money, and parents have been asked to pitch in, to help purchase materials for classrooms. Our government is changing that. Starting this September, every eligible elementary teacher will have direct access to $750 for classroom purchases. And that’s on top of the classroom supplies funding school boards continue to receive, about $32,000 a year for a typical 500-student elementary school. The bottom line: we’re putting more resources directly into the hands of teachers, so they have what they need to support students in the classroom.

Community members gathered for a “grief and grievance” ceremony at a church across the street, and Betty Winholtz said, “I mean, we’re a bird city; where would the birds live? They live in the trees.” The school has an agreement to plant 30 new trees on a different part of the school grounds in an effort to double the number of trees removed.
