In the last 20 years, New Orleans has lost 1/3 of its tree canopy. We’re down to 18% citywide. That’s unacceptable. Atlanta Georgia has a 47% tree canopy. Oak trees not only keep things cooler in the summer months, they are incredible flood mitigators, absorbing hundreds of gallons of water each. We need to plant oak trees all over the city all the time.

Cherry blossom season has begun in Germany. Around 300 trees have bloomed in the city of Bonn Due to the large number of visitors wanting to take photos with the blossoms, part of the city center has been closed to traffic. A pedestrian zone was created to ensure visitors’ safety. Every year, tourists from different countries come here. The first cherry trees were planted back in 1986, and since then the area has become a major tourist attraction. The blooming lasts for about two weeks.

THEY PAVED PARADISE AND PUT UP A SKYWAY I condemn the DENR for allowing the tree-cutting and earth-balling of HUNDREDS OF TREES along Quirino Avenue in Manila City. All of these trees cut. Just to pave the way for the construction of the “Southern Access Link Expressway” (SALEX) by San Miguel Corporation. The SALEX spans a measly 4 kilometers but four elevated lanes. A total of 617 trees will be affected. 617 trees — all of it for just 4 kilometers of an expressway which will never reduce traffic because all expressways have been proven to actually induce demand for automobiles according to empirical research and scientific studies. Hundreds of trees have ALREADY been cut but hundreds more will be cut in the next few days. I call on President Bongbong Marcos, the DENR, SMC, and the City of Manila to stop this madness. Words cannot describe the beautiful reception we received as we visited Maa Elementary School this week. We participated in a ceremony celebrating an initiative that so many good and faithful members and friends of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been involved in to provide electricity and water to a local elementary school in Davao, Philippines. Our Savior Jesus Christ exhibited during His mortal ministry great love for children. We are grateful for this opportunity to follow His example and help the children of Maa Elementary School to feel His love.

NEW: The man who stabbed a 6-year-old to death and was released from prison early has been re-arrested in Florida near an elementary school. Ronald Exantus was convicted in 2015 after stabbing Logan Tipton so hard in the head with a butcher's knife that the knife bent. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says they arrested Exantus near Sunrise Elementary School for failing to register as a felon, as required by Florida law. Exantus was discovered living in a home adjacent to the elementary school and blocks from another school. He failed to register as a felon within 48 hours. "I am proud of the quick response by my deputies and the inter-agency teamwork that helped locate and arrest this disgusting individual," said Sheriff Woods. "The fact that he was living right next to an elementary school is even more repulsive. I have no tolerance for this type of dangerous person flaunting our laws and thinking he would hide out in our county." He is being held with no bond. Florida doesn't mess around.

Just as I promised, here’s the video of Magombani Primary School in Kwale, Singapoor. Look at the state of the classrooms. Teachers say the school has too many students, some are forced to study under trees. In the video, you’ll see a mat in one classroom. Because of overcrowding, many children sit on mats or directly on the floor. And the state of the toilets is truly pitiful. All this, while the government wastes money on petty luxuries.
