Pilot David Paul Allsop was arrested January 15 at Savannah Hilton Head Airport after allegedly failing a sobriety test before a flight to Chicago, police said. According to a police report, Allsop was removed from the cockpit after a TSA officer reported a crew member appearing intoxicated. Allsop attributed the smell to nicotine gum he was chewing, police said. Allsop allegedly failed a sobriety test on the jet bridge and was charged with driving under the influence, according to the arrest report. The arrest happened with passengers already on board. On March 12, 2025, the FAA revoked Allsop’s pilot license, which became public in July. Southwest confirmed then that Allsop was no longer employed by the airline.

It should not be unexpected that Donald Trump issued his statement—and what a pathetic one it was. If you’re not embarrassed by this behavior from the so-called commander in chief, then I don’t know what your threshold is. This is a humiliation ritual, putting the United States—once the most powerful force in the world—on display in the worst way. There was a time when a president didn’t need to shout about power. When they spoke, their words carried weight. Speak softly and carry a big stick. Because people knew that when the United States president spoke, they spoke with clarity. Their words mattered. Not anymore.
