A historic and momentous day for wildlife conservation in West Bengal. Today, alongside Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav Ji, I had the immense privilege of releasing a majestic Royal Bengal Tigress into the verdant wilderness of the Buxa Tiger Reserve in Alipurduar. We were glad to be joined on this momentous occasion by Hon’ble Forest Minister of West Bengal Shri Manoj Kumar Oraon, Hon’ble Minister of School Education Shri Dipak Barman, Hon'ble MP Shri Manoj Tigga along with dedicated Forest Officers, Wildlife Biologists and frontline field staff. Relocated from Bihar’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve, this magnificent big cat marks the beginning of a transformative chapter in our mission to bring the royal roar back to Buxa and establish a thriving resident tiger population. During our safari through the heart of the reserve, we experienced North Bengal’s breathtaking biodiversity and rich natural heritage firsthand. Waving the green flag to watch this splendid tigress step confidently into her vast natural habitat was an unforgettable experience. This milestone is only the start, under our comprehensive ecological revival roadmap, further steps are underway to augment prey base, strengthen habitat corridors, and release more tigers in the coming months, boosting ecological balance and eco-tourism across Dooars. Heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the National Tiger Conservation Authority, and every ground-level forest personnel whose hard work turned this conservation dream into reality. Maharashtra’s Mission for Tiger Conservation and Environmental Sustainability Glad to be present at the event organised on the occasion of 'International Tiger Day 2026' in Nagpur today. For more than 30 years, tiger conservation has been one of our highest priorities. Tigers are found in only 13 countries and India is home to nearly 75% of the world's tiger population. Maharashtra has also done exceedingly well in tiger conservation and is home to 444 tigers across 6 tiger reserves today. This success is the result of continuous efforts by the government in protecting natural habitats, adopting scientific conservation practices and working closely with local communities. With our five-point conservation strategy and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, Maharashtra will continue to strengthen its conservation work and soon emerge as the leading state in tiger conservation. Congratulations to the Forest Department for its dedicated efforts. It is encouraging to see technology strengthening conservation, with AI-based early warning systems and camera monitoring helping reduce human-wildlife conflict, particularly in districts such as Nagpur. As the world faces climate change and growing environmental challenges, protecting our forests has never been more important. By protecting the tiger, we are preserving biodiversity and securing a healthier future for generations to come. Minister Ganesh Naik ji, MoS Dr. Pankaj Bhoyar, MoS Adv. Ashish Jaiswal, MLA Sumit Wankhede, Representatives from Bhutan, Cambodia, Bangladesh and other dignitaries were present. #WATCH | Delhi: On the sidelines of the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2026, Dr Muaviyath Mohamed, Minister of State within the Ministry of Tourism and Environment in the Maldives, says, "At this summit, there are a lot of heads of state, ministers, and high-level officials from different countries and multinational organisations. So this is a good opportunity to talk with delegations of people from other parts of the world who are having similar issues and taking our concerns to authorities or at the multilateral level, so that we can get solutions to our issues, particularly because these are trans-boundary and multinational issues that we have to find solutions to in cooperation with other countries and other multinational organisations. This is a good opportunity to network and work together with other people and institutions with similar issues." He adds, "Here I'll be meeting the Indian counterpart at other institutions as well. Because we are having similar issues in some areas... We have been working on environmental and sustainable development... We have to work together with our counterparts, countries, and organisations so that we can achieve our aims and goals. In that context, India and the Maldives have been working on similar projects for a long time. India has been a reliable partner. India has the technological advances, and for us, the capacity building, knowledge transfer, and technology transfer we could get from India. India is always helpful in looking for these opportunities so that we can get solutions to our issues."
