The two countries were engaged in a deadly conflict until President Trump stepped in to put an end to it. Government: PM Tells Trump Thailand Is Upholding Joint Declaration, Says Cambodia Is the Violating Party — Tariff Issue Will Not Be Linked to Border Crisis The Thai Government has released a summary of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday night, reaffirming Thailand’s adherence to the Joint Declaration and insisting that Cambodia is responsible for the current escalation along the border. According to Government Spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat, the discussion took place at 9:20 p.m. at Government House, with senior Thai officials including Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow and Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun joining the call. Siripong said President Trump expressed concern over the situation and urged a return to the Joint Declaration signed in Kuala Lumpur. The Prime Minister responded that Thailand has respected the agreement “at all times” and has never breached its conditions, while Cambodia’s actions have resulted in Thai casualties and damage, forcing Thailand to respond to defend its sovereignty, territory and the safety of its citizens. The Prime Minister stressed to President Trump that Thailand is not the aggressor and that all military actions have been in self-defense. The government also said President Trump acknowledged Thailand’s position and offered direct lines of communication, telling Bangkok that both the Thai foreign minister and the Prime Minister may contact U.S. counterparts at any time. Thailand and the United States already maintain regular dialogue at multiple levels. On calls for a ceasefire, the Prime Minister told President Trump that Cambodia must be the one to announce and implement any halt to hostilities, withdraw its forces, and remove recently laid landmines that have injured and killed Thai soldiers. The government said written confirmation from AOT (ASEAN Observer Team) indicates the mines were newly planted, demonstrating clear violation of the Joint Declaration by Cambodia. Regarding tariffs, the government said President Trump promised Thailand would receive more favorable tariff treatment than other countries and did not attempt to link trade negotiations with the border conflict. The Prime Minister viewed this as a positive sign, adding that issues raised during the call would be brought into future trade discussions with the United States. The government said written confirmation from AOT (ASEAN Observer Team) indicates the mines were newly planted, demonstrating clear violation of the Joint Declaration by Cambodia. Regarding tariffs, the government said President Trump promised Thailand would receive more favorable tariff treatment than other countries and did not attempt to link trade negotiations with the border conflict. The Prime Minister viewed this as a positive sign, adding that issues raised during the call would be brought into future trade discussions with the United States.
