President Cyril Ramaphosa 🇿🇦 officially launched South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation at OR Tambo International Airport in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. The President said every nation is known by the way it welcomes its visitors, noting that the first impression a visitor forms of a country begins not at a hotel or a conference centre, but at the border gate on arrival. The ETA combines biometric verification, machine learning and the upgraded Electronic Movement Control System as part of a modern digital immigration ecosystem that strengthens border security while making travel to South Africa faster, simpler and more secure.

Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber says the main shift since President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke on illegal immigration is a move toward technology-driven reforms, especially replacing the fraud-prone green ID book with the more secure smart ID system. He says this is being fast-tracked through bank rollouts and biometric verification to reduce fraud and strengthen identity checks.

It was my privilege to demonstrate the digital future of our immigration system to President Cyril Ramaphosa 🇿🇦 yesterday. During SONA in February, the President announced that Home Affairs would build an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to digitalise visa and entry/exit processes at ports of entry. I am delighted to announce that, by the end of September, the ETA will go live for tourist visa applications shorter than 90 days and will be rolled out by the BMA at major international airports. Over time, we will expand the ETA so that every type of visa application is processed only through this AI-based system to eliminate fraud and inefficiency - forever. Through our vision for digital transformation, Home Affairs is building a tech-driven service delivery revolution that enhances national security and efficiency to grow our economy. We will not stop until we have delivered world-class systems that ensure dignity for all! 🇿🇦

🎥 This week, #TeamHomeAffairs launched our groundbreaking new citizenship verification and reinstatement service. Watch the explainer video to understand how this new biometrically-secured platform works. 🛂 The same technology already powers our new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which digitalises and automates visa processes to eliminate fraud and inefficiency. 🪪 Over the next few months, we will expand its use further to enable Smart ID and Passport services at hundreds of bank branches and on banking apps, and to launch a cutting-edge Digital ID system that eliminates inefficiency and identity theft, and clamps down on illegal immigration. 📱 Few governments on earth deliver civics, citizenship and immigration services at this level of technological sophistication. Our drive to deliver 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘈𝘧𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘴 @ 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦 through digital transformation, is rapidly reforming South Africa from a laggard into a global leader in this domain! 🇿🇦
