We have a Minister of Small Business Development with troubling misunderstanding of the law. She went on national TV a year ago to vulgarise the Constitution and the Immigration Act, claiming they prohibit foreign nationals from operating spaza shops. Her statement was embarrassingly inaccurate and grossly misleading, and it reflects poorly on her competence for the office she holds. In fact, the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that there is no law preventing refugees and asylum seekers from operating spaza shops. Refugees and asylum seekers enjoy the same rights as South Africans, except on voting.
