The flood sirens have gone off in the Upper Valley this afternoon due to a combination of heavy rain and snow melt. I have spoken to the Environment Agency and Calderdale Council. Current predictions suggest it is likely to get worse until about 3:30 – 4:00pm and then ease. This is being monitored and I'll update as the day progresses. There is surface water flooding on Halifax Road at Eastwood where a crew are working to unblock drains, surface water flooding at Callis where the road is closed, and a flood warning in Walsden. Other areas including Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, and Todmorden are under flood alerts and teams are out clearing drains. Please avoid travelling to these areas. Residents should put up flood defences if possible. You can get flooding updates on or the Environment Agency website. Flood wardens also update on a number of local Facebook pages including Todmorden Flood Group and Hebden Bridge Flood Action Group. We are at the frontline of climate shocks here in Calder Valley. Rest assured I will continue to raise the issues we face with flooding at the highest levels of government.

Previously, the fountains on both sides had been inoperable. The equestrian statue of General Philip Sheridan sits at Sheridan Circle on Massachusetts Ave NW. Flooding issue resolved in 70% of the identified areas of Bengaluru, remaining to be fixed soon. We had identified 210 areas as flood prone in Bengaluru. Ever since I took over as the Bengaluru Development Minister, we have fixed flooding issues in 166 (70%) of those localities. Flood prevention work is currently going on in 24 areas while work would soon be taken up in the remaining 20 areas. We have built 197 km of storm water drains. Traffic police have identified 132 spots which are flooded during heavy rains. Of these, we have rectified issues in 82 spots and 41 spots are yet to be fixed. We are spending Rs 2000 crore for storm water drains. Rain is controlled by nature while we can only try to control the controllables. We are rectifying flood-prone areas and are trying to help the common people. Quantum of rainfall has been very high in Silk Board junction, Hebbal and Yelahanka area. Underpass works are underway in a couple of places in these areas and they have been flooded. We will work with those departments to resolve these issues. - My statements to the media during the press meet at the BBMP War Room earlier today. #BengaluruRains

The storm even caused a ‘Seafoam storm’ where strong winds blew foam onto people standing on the shore. The storm was thanks to an ‘Atmospheric River’ which is “relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics.” (NOAA) The average Atmospheric River carries the equivalent amount of water as the average flow at the mouth of the Mississippi River.
